Really interested in Stanwell's Perpetual after seeing a few photos. I have a wide area that is mostly shade bar a few hours of evening sun. Would those who have it recommend it for there?
This is my first year with Stanwell Perpetual, so my experience is limited. I read somewhere that it was best in full sun for continuous flowering. So I planted Stanwell Perpetual in a near shadeless spot. It has been my most perpetual bloomer so far. How it will perform in more shade I have no idea. Someone else might be able to enlighten you.
I like the fact that the flowers are in amongst the foliage rather than up on stems. But I would say that this makes deadheading is dangerous mission as Stanwell Perpetual is thorny.
Here's a couple more pictures to tempt you...
As I say, tricky to deadhead!
Don't grow up - grow sideways.
Gardening in the West Midlands on a mix of neutral loamy sand & Victorian building rubble.
@Marlorena, the Ispahan is certainly a bloom machine and unbelievably because I've been tying it in to the magnolia beside it, it is actually flowering right underneath the magnolia canopy in the gloom!
I had 'Stanwell Perpetual' in Cornwall, I don't think I've had it here.. I recall it was always flowering, a few open at a time, in an open spot.. I understand it's the progenitor of David Austin's spinosissima line of roses.
'Frilly Cuff'.. ..the delicious 'Reine des Violettes'.. an old thornless rose.. 'Cornelia'.. needs deadheading.. no problems with heat.. 'Wilhelm'.. heat resistant.. 'Lucky'.. fried a bit yesterday.. 'Champagne Moment'.. ..exotic colouring on ''Woolverstone Church'' 'Sally Holmes'..
Looking at Mr. Vine Eye and Marlorena’s Lady of Shallot I am wondering if I am being too kind. Perhaps I should stop feeding apart from a bit of tomorite and see if I get more blooms that way.
@dabolem I find trial and error is the only way to know whether a rose will fry in sun or bloom enough in shade, except to say most Austins can usually take more shade in our kind of climate than they can in the UK. If you can avoid the hottest, afternoon summer sun all the better, but that means finding the right spot is tricky. My Graham Thomas was a miserable, diseased thing against a north fence. It looked so awful I didn’t give it enough time to mature though, I just couldn’t bear looking at it!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
'Stanwell Perpetual' has such a fresh look to it.. beautiful blooms, I can't recall any issues..
Discandied... a fabulous monster... I'm always puzzled when some say it only grows as a smallish shrub... I've had it shrub, climber and rambler style, but never as big as that.. I don't suppose they deadhead it too often..
@Nollie I'm starting to think we might all have to consider afternoon shade for some of our roses.. I can't say I've ever noticed it before too much, perhaps the sun is more fierce than it used to be, if that's such a thing for an island well north of any tropics..
However I do have one 'invincible', which I hope to show tomorrow..
I'm due for my annual trip to David Austin next weekend. As we only live 45 mins away and the food is great at the restaurant!
I'm looking at the Elizabeth rose that was released last year. I am a little hesitant as I have been disappointed with some the latest Austin's, with Gabriel Oak been particularly disappointing.
I have been waiting patiently for the rose you teased us with @Marlorena. I nearly bought Wild Blue Yonder just now, available at Jones for those others interested, maybe later in the season for me if I rehome any.
Storm overhead right now with steady rainfall thank goodness. Sadly the sound of water butts filling brings me joy 😁 Bring me sunshine is growing on me but I have nowhere to put such a wannabe climber, every cane has a stake on it . also Timeless Purple, the fabulous Scarborough Fair under TGG, 3 Frilly Cuffs that were still bare roots on 30th March and a freebie Eden climber sent in error by TCLEdit: Rain over but a welcome 12mm. As I unplugged everything I produced the above post on my phone. Kudos for those who do that regularly, tortuous.
It’s undoubtedly true that the sun is fiercer here and periods of 30-40c much more common Marlorena. Longer periods of drought and torrential rain too, so it’s a more challenging environment for roses. I’m no climate expert, but I do feel as if the extreme heat has chased me up north, having escaped the south. Sincerely hope the UK is not next!

I love it and the perfume is to die for.

Any opinions would be appreciated
