That does look lovely, husband has agreed to get me whatever rose I like at DA as a birthday gift, definatly going for that one. I dont mind a few floppy roses, whats one more . They should breed more from Brother Cadfael though, its poker straight, sturdy and thornless! Here it is just now! Ive cut the rest round it back shorter as they had finished, its usually surrounded. Brother Cadfael Pomponella (floppy!) Half tempted to put it in a hanging basket... Harry Wheatcroft Lady Marmalade. Suffice to say shes hit the 'Leap' stage of growth! Best shes ever been. Wickedly thorny, but a very sturdy rose.
I'm so miffed that they are cancelling stalwarts like Munstead Wood, Jude the Obscure and Lady Emma Hamilton. Also that their customer interface is so abysmal. I'm stuck behind that particular tractor at the moment, swearing under my breath.
🤣
Sorry. I spent most of the past winter doing burnouts on that particular tractor. They lost a lot of goodwill with their practices.
Thanks WAMS/Mr Dee, they look a bit better! Rose canes do get stronger and more upright with age and good pruning but for those with perennially droopy blooms, well, nothing much you can do about that is there Harlow Carr? I am currently weighing up this one as it’s successor:
Thanks for sharing photos of the new DA. Those, who have ordered it, please do share your views on it. I’m giving it a miss for the time being. I’ve got way too many pinks already. And following my experience with Elizabeth, I no longer trust DA’s descriptions (it is healthy, as promised, but has no scent to speak of and it doesn’t flower that well for me, and the flowers she gets shutter almost instantly…)
Ive recently bought old DA Sir Walter Raleigh because I read it’s supposed to be strongly scented. Well, the scent is strong but not very pleasant to nose at all! It reminds me of Julia Child’s scent, which I also find a bit unpleasant. But the flowers are large and truly beautiful…
@Oliya Lucky you to have Sir Walter Raleigh.. I went to order it this Spring from Larch Cottage but their website went down.. I know Eastcroft do it but let it go... I used to have it years ago, I loved the scent on it and the blooms.. I'm so pleased to see it again here.. A much underrated rose that got sidelined when Gertrude Jekyll came out..
..so this is 'Penelope Lively'.. at least it's full of buds waiting to open, so something to look forward to.. Irritatingly, the label says 4' x 3' yet the website says 3.5 x 4.5 which gives a quite different look.. I'm inclined to think the 3.5 x 4.5 is nearer the mark, or larger..
The foliage is very dark, something of a cross between Silas Marner and Scepter'd Isle going on..
@Marlorena I’ve got it from Eastcroft earlier in the summer. It’s a beautiful plant - I love the look of huge red thorns and the flowers are surprisingly large and delicate looking. I think covid might have messed up my sense of smell… I struggle to detect ‘old rose’ scents and some scents, like jasmine and some roses, just smell rather unappealing.
Your Penelope Lively looks very good! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the flowers when all those buds begin to open.
I wish I had got it now @Oliya .. maybe later, I remember it being a bit thorny, which probably put me off getting it again.. Incidentally, the report of 'Penelope Lively'.. or Penelope Pitstop as my husband calls it, as having ''very few thorns''.. which is why I ordered it actually.. looks to be wide of the mark.. quite a few thorns, fairly average I would say so far.. I expected ''virtually thornless'' from the description.. perhaps it'll change with maturity.. Anyway, I've planted it on my divide railings, so it can go either way..
..my young own root 'Silas Marner' for comparison.. very similar I think.. but Silas has fiery red new growth.. ..and lovely blooms..
Lovely, glossy-looking plant, @Marlorena. And nice that it has so many buds... better than opening it up to a pile of petals and deadheading to do! Have they delayed them somehow to ensure we get the first flush on the plant when it arrives, do you think?
The Gertrudes out the front haven't stopped yet... just now. Only the second bloom from A Shropshire Lad. It doesn't want to show off. This was a couple of days ago but it is still looking just as good despite some unexpected rain (thanks, Nollie!) And some bright ones from today/yesterday, South Africa and Henri Delbard

In fact my Guillot wish list, mostly Generosas, is currently at seven, or was it eight..
