@peteS Beyond my pay grade that one Pete... it sounds good so you'll have to keep us informed as to how efficient it proves to be, or not.. If it's a regular product at a garden centre, then I've probably used it at some point..
Great advice, thanks @Marlorena. I can get it about 4ft from the base of MIP but from what you say about G3s getting away from you maybe that’s not enough, given the choice is between two fairly vigorous ones - Etoile Violette or Star of India. Hmm, I think I might play safe and pair it with a tallish geranium instead!
Warsawska Nike is smaller and well behaved, but mine is currently paired on an obelisk with Mme. de Sévigné and I want to keep that combo.

@Marlorena It's a Westland product so I assume it's very common. I'm using it to re-pot my Ancient Mariner into a much bigger pot. I've no idea how much AM is prone to BS, it didn't fare too badly last year as I remember, so we'll see.
@peteS that compost doesn’t help to prevent blackspot I’m afraid. I use it. My Thomas A Beckett still got blackspot even though it is planted in this. Although I’ve found it’s very good compost. My TAB grew to 1 metre tall in it’s first year.
The best colour in my garden at the moment, in fact the only colour, is from species tulip Whittalii. They are incredibly sun sensitive, closing in shade and immediately opening when the sun hits:

Did you unearth Gruß an Aachen @WAMS
to free it from the spring bulbs underneath? Just curious as I have a
number of one-leaf tulips growing in the same situation. I went for
ripping the tulip leaves off.
Ah, @Nollie, the startled mopp is back.
GdeF in full bloom will be sight to behold. On the clematis, I plant
them at least 0,75m apart because the root of a grown clematis is a
mighty thing. Thank you for reminding me of the fence training
option. I will be taking my huge hedge down in October and surprise,
there is a fence behind it. Now I have a perfect excuse to look out
for clematis and a lot of clerotical relations.
My TCL delivery will arrive tomorrow. Again, greed ate brain when I hit buy. Spent the evening wandering around in the garden to
find 12 homes for the roses. What is your opinion: will Gertrude
Jekyll look good between Palais Biron / Purple Lodge and Reine des
Violettes. Or is this a clash of pinks and purples?
Tulips are perfectly fine with roses, I like tulips as their foliage disappears quickly.. unlike daffodils whose bulbs contain lycorine, which is allelopathic, and can be detrimental to the roots of roses if planted too close.. I have few narcissi planted in the ground here, but I try to keep them away from newly planted roses.. although you will see gardens with established roses and daffodils flourishing, so it may not have such a deleterious effect as sometimes claimed..
I just don't like their leaves that hang around far too long..
