Promesse de Fleurs, a French nursery has a rose sale on so I had a gander, as you do..
I searched for English Roses, just in case they had any discontinued DAs I might be interested in. The list started with a range called ‘English Legends’ from Harkness, with some literary names. Cocking a snoop at DA policies perhaps?! I checked on the Harkness site and they weren’t listed, but presumably they are existing roses renamed for the EU market. Anyone recognise any?
I was already happy that my climbers are leafing out 🍃. The first flowers of the clematis are opening . 3 weeks later then last year.
Pruned yesterday the roses of my mother in law. Oh boy heaps of dead wood and some old specimens , mainly Iceberg roses over 20 year old) are giving up.
My dear OH was astonished by the state of the plants and requested me to order still some bareroots to replace . He choose his favorite Julia Child (4)
How intriguing. Covent Garden is another name for "as seen on Gardener's World" Cream Abundance, @Nollie, and Oxford is L'Aimant, I think? Otherwise no clue. You should buy all of them, really, and see if you recognise them.
ETA: actually I am pondering a half-price Ivor's Rose from Peter B, @Nollie, which you could chalk up to your influence. But it's never worth buying just one rose, is it?
Rose de Cornouaille is ‘Cornish Rose’, got that from google. Ha, I’m not that familiar with Harkness’ roses so buying the lot wouldn’t help WAMS! Cream Abundance is a good shout, I remember that lady’s garden.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Her garden was wonderful. I wonder if @Fire got her Cream Abundance.
Ah, realised you can find out from helpmefind as they list alternative names. So it turns out Sherlock Holmes is Richard of Chichester, which I meant to buy in honour of my husband, but instead bought Sweet Jessica and Pretty Jessica in honour of the dog.
@JessicaS Yes it may well be climbing Claude M... I imagine it's a popular rose with that name as it's sold in UK.. hope you have a decent support for it.. beautiful garden of roses..
@Alfie_ Only 6?.. they look ready for planting and good looking roses.. best of luck with your obelisk project, looking forward to seeing how you get on with that..
@PeterAberdeen We also look forward to seeing how your newly developed plot is progressing.. photos please whenever..
@zugenie All doing well I see... for those yellowing leaves, I assume you've fed it with a fertilizer containing micronutrients? if not, I recommend you do that.. if no improvement seen by late April, I would root drench with seaweed/sequestered iron solution.. but you should find it will grow out of it and look better with warmer conditions, so you may not need to do this.. 'Blue Moon' coming along nicely too, a good prune does them the world of good..
Have been reading your winter thread. Extensive result to arrive next week. I have a bad case of rose bug. Are non-expat Continentals allowed here? I live in Hamburg, Germany, zone 7b. As you can tell, English is not my mother tongue. Please be gentle.
Started gardening in 2016 when moving house. This is what I got back then. House sits square in the middle of plot. North South
Since then I have been wrecking my back to reduce lawn. Status quo last summer:
North
South
This being a rose thread, my absolute No. 1 rose is blue for you. Illiterate like many other of my plants when it comes to their own growth instructions. Label stated 60cm. Did not state how often. It is now at 3x60cm.

oh and I liked the way the DA’s further down the page were interspersed with cucumbers, is there a French joke in there somewhere?!
