I haven’t opened the Rose thread for a while, needed a break to recover
after loosing so much growth to the deer. Thank you for all the sympathy 💐 I increased my fencing, and so far, so good. Some new foliage is coming through, so fingers crossed that the roses will come back stronger.

I’m looking to buy a rose as a present - I saw that some people don’t like roses as presents, but this was especially requested. Our neighbour looks after our cats when we go on holiday and this time we agreed that I would get him a new rose as a thank you present instead of the usual bottle of gin. It is to grow up an old, sturdy and very mature apple tree. He would like something white, not too creamy. And thornless or just limited thorns if possible. I have been looking at Purezza, a rambling rose from Peter Beale, but it is not in stock and I wondered if anyone has any other suggestions? Or any experience with Purezza?

Quick question for all you rose experts on here. My Vanessa Bell has lots of new foliage and seems healthy but leaves are a very pale green. She is growing in a large pot and is overdue for her annual horse manure mulch but I wondered about sequestered iron? I have it for my rhododendrons but didn’t know if it would be beneficial for a rose. Can anyone help?

Canary Bird is lovely @Tack, so yellow and cheery. It’s been crazy warm for April here, creeping up towards 30c, so that could have been the issue with GC, so please don’t feel bad. I’m glad I’m not living in the south anymore, I reckon it will hit 40 there very soon!

    Hi all,

I am looking to buy some new climbing roses to go over an arch and wondered if you had some recommendations. The arch is 215cm heigh and 160cm across, and it will be planted in a raised bed, one either side, which is 90cm high, 50cm wide and 80cm long, it’s in a part shade position.

I have a ‘wish list’ but I’m definitely flexible. I’d like:
    1. Fragrant
    2. Lots of blooms
    3. As long a flowering time as possible
    4. Not too thorny

For colour I’m happy with pretty much anything but not yellow or orange. I’d like something bright that looks nice in sun and shade and will have the “wow factor” when I look at it from my kitchen window.

    Some colours I definitely like:
    white
    bright pink
    purple

I’m also interested in planting a different colour either side of the arch and letting them intermingle if that’s possible.

    Thank you in advance!

@debs64, my Vanessa Bell has lighter green leaves as compared to other roses so not sure if yours need anything. May be if you post a photo, someone can advice.

Did you give it a slow release spring feed?

Do you have BMS in a pot @Tack?
Mine would need to go in a pot and it sounds like quite a big rose.

Just another day at the plant...

@debs64 I also checked my VB just now and it has comparatively lighter green leaves. I think there is nothing to worry.

And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth :)
