@WAMS Yes I imagine they've kept it in cold storage .. there's no sign of any earlier flush of blooms.. if it grows with fewer thorns then I think I shall like it very much.. it's next to a narrow path, that's why I especially wanted low thorn.. at the moment I'm not seeing that..
Catching up... @WAMS you asked, whether my lillies and their pests have a negative impact on roses when grown very closely together. I don't think so. I have not seen any damages. However, I see a strange influence on the colour of blooms on my hosta .
Follow all the discussions on new DA roses. As my best surprise this year is Draga Frayla, a PhenoGeno rose, I am looking into their portfolio. TCL has a number of them listed. Draga is holding the blooms for weeks, ignoring rain and storm and only morphs from original deep red to deep purple when temperatures soar abouve 30 degrees for a couple of days. I am very happy with this rose.
I asked about DAs a while ago that stay on the smaller side. I am not looking for a particular colour but cannot plant any more 2x2 meter monsters. At least not without major lawn loss. Therefore I do hope I will source another Lady Emma Hamilton somewhere. Oh, and I want to try some brown-mauve-morbid ones. Just because that colour is still missing in my garden. Any recommendations on hardy ones?
Why am I thinking about next season? Because it feels like winter here. Actually taken at my father's funeral 2 years ago. Even in all that sadness I could not ignore this beautiful sight.
Forecast for tomorrow, rain and storm. More of this obviously.
@Elbfee those morbid/brown/lilac roses are strange, I think. I was given Mocha Rose and realised that I hated it- it was just brown, so looked like a rose that had expired in a vase some weeks before. A UK grower, C and K Jones, posted this interesting clip last week, showing Koko Loko and Mocha Rose / Mokarosa, with Burgundy Ice as a partition. Koko had these pretty pink reverses and looked far prettier to my eyes (though I was in the minority judging by the comments). What do you think? https://fb.watch/lA4CJf-trM/ I concluded though that since I only liked the rose in lilac mode it was probably better to stick to lilac roses.
Thank you for that link @WAMS. I am in your team and prefer KokoLoko. I also like Café and Chocolate Ruffles. But I do like odd colours in general like Gletscher and Hot Chocolate, even Kathryn would fit in here I think.
Not many of my roses are still in there first flush, but there are a few still in flower. Love Knot still going The differing colours of Sheila's Perfumed And Sparkle All still with us after a heavy thunderstorm.
@PeterAberdeen My internet is still wayward, apparently we are using a router that should only be found in a museum, so I'm awaiting delivery of a modern version.. something called a 'Hub'.. Meanwhile,... Re your Princess Anne, if you haven't already done so, that's a sucker and should be removed... Re your non-repeating 'New Dawn'..[I'm not seeing 'Albertine' there].. I'll have to answer that later as it's a bit complicated.. but can you tell me please, do you cut this rose back frequently? it looks as though it's hacked back..
Been a while - but I have been away again on business to Hungary and not long back and just catching up on all the postings over the many pages that have gone up since I left.
In answer to your question @Marlorena. Princess Anne sucker was removed immediately on your instruction. They are stunning as a the Full Standard.
No we do not cut the unknown climber at all. It did get crushed when the fence blew over (maybe while it looks hacked back) and it is engulfed in weeds.
I'll need to get some pictures to post as my Poet's Wife is now in full bloom and Lady of Shalott is days away from full bloom. They are a bit floppy, but as you all point out, they are in their first year.
My Gertrude Jekyll has taken a turn for the worst with all the awaiting buds going black and dying! What could have caused that. Am I being a bad parent and neglecting a need or is this weather (deluge and heat, but not too hot, so humidity is high) or is there a fungus/bug that caused the problem - she did get hit by the Rose Leaf Sawfly Slug.
@PeterAberdeen I've no idea about your 'GJ' rose, why that's happened.. sorry..
Re your no i.d climber.. I'd like to see more photos of blooms, but the foliage and bud formation look like the 'New Dawn' type.. however it could be the parent plant which is identical - 'Dr. Van Fleet'.. this is once flowering only.. back in the day both roses were offered and likely confused in commerce... I had 'New Dawn' 3 times and never repeated for me.. I've had this conversation with people in different countries and they've said the same thing..
Anxiously awaiting Poly's arrival. Carried all pots, furniture and ceramic lions to safety. The storm will do the deadheading for me. Hopefully not more.
