Penelope arrived not looking too lively! Most of the buds and branches were snapped and hanging. The remaining ones are largely bullnosed. And the darkness of the foliage hides it, but about half the leaves have blackspot. Best for health? Hmm... I know I can cut it all back and get some more buds in six weeks, but what a waste of money.
Anyway, The Sun and the Heart.... a genuinely healthy and prolific rose.
Great Expectations... a really beautiful colour.
And Munstead Wood, who could console me for any number of dodgy DA deliveries.
BTW just read an old Agatha Christie where the killer was exposed by her lie that the mark on her wrist came from the thorns of rosa Zéphirine Drouhin... which Poirot knew to be thornless!
^ Good they offered to replace it, but consistency seems sorely lacking, especially at those prices, Surely a ‘best for health’ rose shouldn’t need spraying either. I spy a spot of rust there too. I think Marlorena must have the luck of the gods, WAMS, hers looked perfect!
Glad you got some rain @Tack. I wouldn’t discount Falstaff based solely on my mad climate or first season experience, though! ‘Soul’ was dreadful to start with but did improve rain resistance in subsequent years It’s survived the deluges really well:
Alister Stella Gray starting a new flush:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
..spray damage? I don't think so.. at least you now have 2.. looking at its growth habit, I think one might be quite enough of this rose..
Your ASG looking great Nollie, all those buds..
'Lady of Shalott'.. from my front door.. 'Sophie's Perpetual'.. tied up somewhat.. it's growth habit is lax.. ..my Phlox and Dahlia border.. Phlox 'Sweet Summer Lilac'..
@PeterAberdeen Re your no i.d climber.. I'd like to see more photos of blooms, but the foliage and bud formation look like the 'New Dawn' type.. however it could be the parent plant which is identical - 'Dr. Van Fleet'.. this is once flowering only.. back in the day both roses were offered and likely confused in commerce... I had 'New Dawn' 3 times and never repeated for me.. I've had this conversation with people in different countries and they've said the same thing..
Well, I contacted DA and they have kindly agreed to send another (although I didn't request this). They also say this isn't disease but spray damage
Why on earth are they spraying?

But Christie calls ZD a red rose. But ZD is distinctly pink. Not remotely red. I always wondered why she made the error.
@PeterAberdeen Your roses are doing well.. two of my favourites, past and present..
Yes that's 'New Dawn' rose, the blooms, foliage and the abundant thorns all point to it.. but if it never repeats bloom then it's either one of two reasons... your far north location may prevent further blooming, or you have the identical once flowering 'Dr. Van Fleet'.. 'New Dawn' is a genetic mutation of that rose..

She did! Then she switched back to pink, at least in the edition I read (or perhaps a later editor changed it). I think she wrote her magnificent books in a hurry and very possibly under the influence.😁
It isn't rust, @Nollie... it's spray damage. Some more spray damaged bits...
It's not disease, because the rose is disease-resistant and doesn't need spraying, so it's spray damage, got it? Good.
I am genuinely glad Marlorena got such a beautiful one, though! And that I didn't add a couple of other roses to the order. I'll get them from Styles or Jones.

As requested more pictures of the Unknown 'New Dawn' type.
and for good measure:
Whilst out I also caught these beauties:
Floppy youngsters, but making me feel happy!
