@Marlorena I can believe it! I’ve been watering once a week as we’ve not had a drop of rain for 6 weeks now, after it seeming to rain every day from jan-april 🤣 forecast some rain this afternoon so fingers crossed!!
@Tack minerva hasn’t coped too well but it’s her first year in the ground so I’ll see how she is next year, this is the same bloom, friday evening & this afternoon
So they are crisping unfortunately!
Popped to the garden centre as you do, saw a very beautiful display of gertrude jekyll’s, she’s another on my list for the front garden after so many glowing reviews here, so had to take a snap (and have a sniff, beautiful scent)
..those 'GJ's ' are simply gorgeous.. I think even I would pick one up.. and I've had it here before.. they look well looked after, which they don't everywhere..
Glad some of you are getting some rain, it's clouding over here and looks ominous..
'Mutabilis'.. 'Scented Garden'.. clematis 'The Vagabond'.
He looks so happy in the garden Marlorena, we never forget our old friends, do we?
I often see people quoting RHS advice on the forum and think ‘that’s b*llocks’, not only about roses. I just pity the poor beginner planting a Graham Thomas in an open bed of dry soil and expecting it to be a tidy, easy shrub that will grow without any water! So early stock was more shrubby like yours then turning into a climber, seems to be the norm for quite a few DAs.
Ominous thunder rumbles and black clouds here, we are about to get another downpour and lose the satellite internet..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Marlorena your Mutabilis is gorgeous. Lovely the pics with you beloved dog, I also didn’t know Graham Thomas used to be a shrub, but I agree with @Nollie that it’s not whatI would see apt for a beginner rose. I say it as a beginner myself, I started to consider to plant roses in the garden when I saw that a rose which I got as a gift (Nostalgie by Tantau) was growing well with no issues and no fuss at all. Before I thought roses were difficult to grow and I never consider to put them in the garden.
Now, even though I really don’t like Nostalgie so much anymore, I keep it where it is, just because it has had the merit of letting me know and appreciate how easy and beautiful roses could be. It earned that spot in the middle of the garden.
From the pictures of you all I got the very strong impression that Lady of Shallot does its best if put in full sun, even if they say you can put it in a shady spot.
So, this Autumn it’s going to move in a full sun spot. I found a person willing to take my Madame Alfred Carriere, which I can’t possibly keep because it’s a monster of a rose, too big for me, so I will have a new spot for a new climber.
They say The Pilgrim is blooming in shady places, and Golden Shower too. I will try one of those two.
@Nollie, the weather this year seems a little crazy, 30c in Uk and here in Northern Italy we didn’t get there yet. Also, we had and will still have lot of storms and rain, very unusual for this time of the year.
I heeled in Graham Thomas in October, bareroot from Trevor White. It met with various dog- and tree-related catastrophes and was reduced to one small cane (from 3 or 4) less than a foot high. Yet it lives..... I'll keep watering and see what it does. I liked the Graham Stuart Thomas rose book that Marlorena recommended so this was a sentimental choice!
Alfie's standard is going to be pretty stunning I reckon.
An artist at work for sure... such delightful, thoughtful combinations..
I like your 'Golden Gate' rose pitter patter.. it strikes me as having better colour and form to the oft planted 'Golden Showers'..
@Nollie ..well yes, quite.. a colourful term I'm sure we all think from time to time when reading various advices offered.. and I'm not excepting myself in that..
We had a pleasantly cool cloudy day yesterday (19C) with a short light rain (nowhere near enough). Similar today, light clouds, light mist, 20-21C (ideal blackspot weather). But only a low chance of rain and much hotter days are coming
I have to join Marlorena in praising 'Scented Garden', this rose should be much more grown. 4.5-5' for me with light pruning, it could grow to 6' without pruning or be kept just under 4'. Completely healthy and easy to grow. Only starting for me now because it is in a shady spot. 'Lovestruck', a little bit boring but seems to be a good rose 'Gabriel Oak', 'Blackberry Nip' behind Pheno Geno 'Mileva', the most delicious raspberry fragrance, makes me want to eat it
@Marlorena Your 'Lady of Shalott' is stunning. And 'Bring Me Sunshine' looks really good in both your and @pitter-patter 's photos.
