@cooldoc DA was looking wonderful for your visit!!
We hit 30C today, miserable, too hot to work in the garden though I squeezed a little in, in the morning. Forecast thunderstorms tomorrow, I hope they come, we need the rain!
Blue moon put out only one bloom this year, but it was MASSIVE and lasted a week.
Mary delany, blooms got a bit crispy in the sun, this is from earlier in the week
Minerva, the colour is just beautiful
VdB, not healthy this year but worth it, absolutely covered in blooms and they are also lasting about a week!
Last but not least, ferdinand pichard, the cutting that I planted out earlier this year! Scent is so strong you don’t even need to put your nose to it.
Charlie (dog) found a frog today by Zelda’s (rabbit) hutch, it went hopping off across the garden so I’m hoping it makes a home here in the pond/garden!!
30C in the shade.. despite flooding in May, I had to water can you believe..
edhelka.. yes Veilchenblau was somewhat rampant for me in another garden, and I didn't like the colour that much, not in full sun.. I preferred other purple ramblers, 'Bleu Magenta' which is quite dark and thornless, and 'Rose-Marie Viaud', which is quite a charming rose with mixed mauve and purple colourings.. but all very brief in flowering.. I won't be revisiting those I don't think..
I had 'Purple Skyliner' next to 'Kew Gardens', and I thought they made a good match..
Official temp here was 30.8C @zugenie with 5 mins of a few large raindrops, could hear distant thunder. Watered absolutely everything this evening with the hose and am determined to reduce this task. Anniversary Rose coped well, many roses like Marie pavie now need a big deadheading session but the newer blooms held up well. How did your Minerva cope? I quite fancy that one. I have always hankered after Veilchenblau and now have it. Fingers crossed it lives up to my expectations eventually. I love Edhelka's PS so thought that would be more sensible but it was a mildew disaster all season here last year. I now have 2 once flowering roses, and I never thought I would have any just like I didn't want standards, and now have 3!
@Marlorena I could kinda guess if they would be in bloom or not as the gardens are hardly 40mins from where I am now.. that was the reason I did not want to visit last week.. and the pics I posted does not have Elizabeth (if I remember correctly).. mostly Eustacia Vye.. Gabriel Oak was superbly scented in the morning sun..
I must say it was nice to see and smell the roses.. but then soon you realise that, there is nothing new for you to explore.. I got most of the fragrant ones except the climbers and I could guess most by sniffing them.. was impressed by Shropshire lad (a once bloomer).. big double blooms and one plant covering up the pillar nicely.. happy to enjoy few old roses.. and the scent of moss was wonderful..
another issue was the practicality of planting.. they had such neat borders with only roses in most places.. where as in a typical garden we would have all sorts of perennials, bulbs etc along with roses.. so could not really get any new ideas of how to plant others along with roses or how much space should be given without overwhelming the roses... guess that search would continue..
Dannahue was scented more than I expected.. a bit of spicy, myrrh with something else as well...
@WAMS regarding Emily Bronte.. in the first pic, the rose behind (along the pillar) is also EB.. yes, I was also surprised given how upright and thick its canes are..
@cooldoc It sounds like you had a nice day at David Austin’s. I keep meaning to go (it’s about 1 hour and 20 minutes drive), but I’ve been very busy with school work.
First flowers on Aloha. I moved this rose earlier in the year to make room for Ghislaine to grow on the pergola. I have pruned back and it seems to be fine for now. I might have to give it more water though. In fact, the whole garden desperately needs some rain, so if you’re having thunderstorms, send some over. A lot of the roses have crisped up in yesterday’s sun.
After seeing everyone's beautiful photos of Desdemona I made my mind up to get 2 to have in 2 large pots on my patio ... but I've also seen beautiful photos of Emily Bronte 🤔 Which one would you favour between the 2?
Emily Bronte is really beautiful but I don't have Desdemona (yet) to compare it with, Cat.
Just a couple of quick snaps... my white buds on Blue for You are yielding cute little white roses (all on the same bud cluster). I like the effect. LOTS more out today but For Your Eyes Only is really gorgeous. Can't wait till this plant takes off! Forever Royal (like Munstead Wood) does not seem to be insta-crisping in the heat unlike most of the roses in those tones.
Really interested in Stanwell's Perpetual after seeing a few photos. I have a wide area that is mostly shade bar a few hours of evening sun. Would those who have it recommend it for there?
For a pot, I think Desdemona is better than Emily Brontë because she keeps a more compact shape. At least that's my experience so far. My Emily Brontë has only been in the pot two years although I've had her three. But she's leggy.

@Nollie your boule de neige has grown almost identically to mine! I’ve been really pleased with the height it’s put on already
@edhelka that’s a gorgeous climber!!
