Way behind on reading. And way behind on deadheading. At least we got some rain.
Biedermeier is a really short, unscented rose with leathery, glossy leaves and pretty round buds that open with a pink rim. Cute.
The Sun King is back. I had to reorder it when the first one died in spring. It arrived yesterday.
My profile pic rose. Nostalgie. Moved it last year from a prominent spot in bright sun as it refused to grow more than one or two blooms. And, what happens in the not so prime spot? Flowers galore.
Maurice is the only strongly scented painter rose that I know. Rose des Cisterciens is well scented, but Maurice is more intense to my nostrils. Thought I had lost this rose last winter, reordered one in my May bare root shopping spree. Now I have two.
Princesse de Nassau / rosa moschata Autumnalis, a noisette from Laffay, supposed to rebloom. As it starts only now with the first flush, this will, as always, be the only flush. I like it more for the lime green foliage that stays this fresh green all through the season. Supposed to be a climber. Accordingly I did not prune it. Still it stays shortish.
My last standard comes into bloom. Thought I train it as a weeping standard. But the long canes produce only a lot of foliage and hardly any blooms. Will reconsider my pruning.
Very much at the tail end of the first flush here, but there's a few roses still in bloom. Reine de Violettes. Jacques Cartier. Amande Paternotte. Gertrude Jekyl. Blush noisette. Second flush will not be far behind. Boule de Neige. Rosa cristata. It may have the longest first (and only) flush out of the roses I have. The mossy buds give it earlier interest as well.
Blue Moon - scent is just devine. 20 flowers/buds from first flush with two bare roots in the same pot. Twice in a Blue Moon which went in the ground instead produced one bud and one flower 4 weeks ago and there is still no new growth.
Gabriel Oak just glowing in the border. Love the scent:
New purchase yesterday at Harkness - Sweet Syrie. With its beautiful scent and @JessicaS comments earlier in the season I was compelled to get it:
Now no longer unkown thanks to Nollie and Marlorena - Jude the Obscure. Scent is one of the best in the garden:
With the cooler weather some much nice Chandos B blooms. Hoping the pale pink sweet peas will set it off behind when they finally flower:
Summer Romance finally blooming:
Alfred C outside the bedroom window. Please excuse the sash widows in much need of paiting.
A few questions for anyone that has either Wollerton Old Hall or Gabriel Oak (or both):
Is the 4ft established spread stated by DA for GO accurate?
How far does Wollerton Old Hall spread width ways as it doesn't state this? Need to know if I need an extra one to cover the wall or whether one will do it?
thanks @Marlorena I was reading up on them and saw the hips have a lot of uses, I will probably end up leaving them for the birds!! I’ve staked it now just to stop it flopping onto the tree next to it
@Alfie_ gorgeous blue moon, that’s one of my favourites and the one that started the rose addiction
Visited Peter Beales' rose garden and nursery yesterday. It was interesting to compare it to David Austin's which I went to two weeks ago. Some lovely views in the Peter Beales garden.
Overall not as large, varied or as interesting as David Austin's in my opinion but definitely worth a visit. I just wish that more of the roses had their name tags. There was several I liked the look of but had no idea of their identity.
@JessicaS I am sure you will enjoy your visit to David Austin's gardens. The summer only flowering roses will be over but there will be plenty of others blooming. DA seem to keep their largest and best specimens for their own shop, so if there is anything you are thinking of buying, it may be best to purchase it while you are there rather than buy it from a garden centre when you get back home.
@Daniel Rutherford You asked about best performers in the first flush. I have a very young garden with the roses trying to establish themselves but my two stand outs are...
Stanwell Perpetual
Claire Marshall
Both very bloom heavy and disease light.
Don't grow up - grow sideways.
Gardening in the West Midlands on a mix of neutral loamy sand & Victorian building rubble.
@Alfie_ just snapped a picture of my Wollerton Old Hall. It is a transplant from this park that I worked in, therefore I do not know how old it is. In my garden it is 3 years old. The width is 150cm, height about the same. Quite a substantial rose that does not need any support. When deadheading I always go down at least 2 knots to keep it manageable. Just snapped this pic for you, not a great shot. It is really windy outside, excuse the petal carpet. I do not grow Gabriel Oak. Yet :-)
More wonderful rose pics, old and moderns.. glad you enjoyed your trip to Beales, LB.. I go there quite a lot, I do enjoy their gardens and usually find the tags after some rummaging around amongst all the weeds..
'Elizabeth' got the boot today... I found some canker on the canes and it looked decidedly unhealthy.. it had lots of its own roots too..
@Tack have you got an Eden standard did I see?? Oooh now thats tempting to see those gorgeous blooms! Where was it from?
@Alfie_ im delighted you got Syrie! Hope she does well for you, and yes such a beautiful scent.
@LateralBreaks good tip thank you! Ive never been shockingly despite an 80+ roses collection! I do love the classic cupped Austins. Im eying a big dark pink, not sure which but im very sure I will be tempted by something or other in the shop! Ive been clearing a border today of an old ceonothus, and im moving some scratty shrubs out of my left border too so I could potentially accomodate a 'big' Austin in those, otherwise its a big pot, or a very sunny spot out front, so options!

Not much going on here rose-wise — Pheno Geno Draga/Hallie doing well
