One has to assume that people using this forum can read!
The Potting Shed is the place where we can chat off topic about anything and everything, always bearing in the mind the rules about language and abuse.
The very first post on this thread stated what it was to be about and asked for opinions. Anyone feeling remotely sensitive about the topic should be sufficiently aware of their own good not to have read further. It's called being streest wise these days but common sense will cover it too.
Nobody has the right to shut down a reasonable debate by others just because the subject is difficult.
As for the topic, the plain fact is that children and especially boys are not being taught by their parents or schools to have respect for others. The levels of violence towards women and girls in particular is increasing and the police and legal system have neither the will nor the means to investigate and prosecute. Just look at what has come to light about police attitudes to rape and women in Charing Cross. It is accepted too that they will not be an isolated group of such nastiness.
Rape, stalking, bullying, sexual aggression and so on will continue and proliferate as long as we, as society, accept that it's OK to ignore it as someone else's problem or just Boys being Boys.
It needs to be talked about and discussed until finally there is a will to change.

No it isn't punkdoc. You asked a question and members answered. It's up to each of us to respect others opinions, thank God this country still has freedom of speech. For how much longer I have no idea.

I think Punk was just apologising for not giving a little 'heads up' to people who might not want to read about sexual violence, as this couldn't be inferred from the title.
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
Yes I realised that Loxley but as Obelixx says we can all read so if anyone didn't like the topic they can move on. What I was saying is that punkdoc has a right to ask a question about what is a topical subject just as we still have the right to answer in a way that respects others' opinions. Most of us have had our say about the topic which is a good thing.
Just listened to Val on Radio 4 and I'm even more conflicted now. She said that a club should employ players based on character - but how on earth do you do that in working terms (I've heard people talk about Boris saying he has integrity - so whose judgement of characters is used)? She also said that DG apologising may have helped - but does that work as well?
I just feel that we have an underclass made from 'criminals' of certain crimes who do then become unemployable - as would it be OK for DG to be serving in a shop, or pulling pints in a bar or coming to your house to clean your windows? What would be an acceptable job - and even within the 'acceptable jobs', is it then fair on people already working there who may also then object? Why is Val's objection to DG any more valid than say a person who sits at the next desk to him in an office?
But then I get stuffed and go round and round in circles in my head thinking about which crimes then I would feel happy about a person having committed and being 'welcomed' (or at least acceptable) back into society. I stall on most of the violent crimes.
Isn't out justice system structured to address this issue? Isn't it the case that jurors in court are not allowed to know the defendant's criminal past - or else that may influence their decision on the crime under review? Isn't that then also true of society - shouldn't all 'criminals' be judged then on what they are now, and not what they did before? If DG's past wasn't known, how should he be treated?
Nope - still can't get my head around what is right or wrong in this case - the right seems wrong under certain light and the wrong seems right. Val is perfectly within her rights to act as she did - but if everyone acted in the same way, DG is unemployable - or even a social outcast (as is it ok to drink with him in a pub, go to a concert...but not to work with or employ him?).
I think the original post is perfectly reasonable and the subject matter is such that people will understandably have strong views. I have mine but I'm not going to share them on a gardening forum (despite the fact I've already replied but that was only to clarify a certain point) nor would I have asked the question on a gardening forum. That's just my personal view and if I was moderator (which I'm obviously not, so perhaps somewhat irrelevant) I would have locked it..again I know people will disagree ..that's fair enough.
Thanks @Uff. I think in future I might put a warning along with the title, because there will be more, I am so confused about so many things these days. A few years ago everything was black and white, now I more and more shades of grey.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
