I am interested in what people think about this.

Obviously I understand that what he did was terrible, but should he never be allowed to work again?

Of course he should be allowed to work, but people may choose not to support him/his employer, and they may choose not to be associated with him or work closely with him.

Absolutely @JennyJ.  Rape is a horrendous crime so he has to expect that some people will not be comfortable working with him, watching him play, supporting the club that has employed him.

He clearly is working again as he has been signed by Raith Rovers. But I completely understand Val McDermid withdrawing her sponsorship.  I would too.  But then we are both women - male sponsors may take a different view.

From what I've read the case didn't go to Criminal trial because there was insufficient evidence.

My understanding is that the level of proof in a civil case is not as high as in a criminal one.

However I believe that Val McDermid is entitled to spend her money how she wishes.

    It's a conundrum.

I agree with JennyJ and although it doesn't make any difference I'd like to know what the prosecutors said. The final sentence has been cut short.

I don't know what I think, but it worries me that a previous crime might prevent someone being able to work in the future.

He was never even charged with rape, never mind found guilty.
Yes, rape is a horrible crime, but i'm uneasy about folk being sued in a civil case for what should be a criminal matter.

In a way I think it would be better if he'd been convicted and served time. As it is, there'll be a feeling that he's got away with it once and might do it again. At least if he'd been convicted he might have got some counselling or something to help him see the error of his ways and maybe be less likely to reoffend. A fine/damages (however big) seems to indicate that you can just pay up and all will be OK, which of course it isn't.

The prosecution service is notorious for not prosecuting rape so I reckon if she felt strong enough to take out a civil case there was a case to answer.

I think you should give some thought to the effect on the victim of certain types of crime.  Rape, stalking, assault of any kind are not like insurance fraud or shop lifting, serious tho those things are.

I recently became aware of a neighbour's son being convicted of rape - he's currently in jail. I knew the son albeit at a slight distance, but he's a year younger than my younger daughter, and they all went to school together etc. I won't say more than that.
Would I be happy if my girls or their friends had to work with him? Yes.

However, I realise this is a slightly different circumstance, because it hasn't gone to a trial, but I feel the same way as @JennyJ, and there are too many grey areas around accusations because of the very nature of the offence. One person's word against another's etc.

I don't think this is a terribly good subject to discuss on the forum either though. It will inevitably lead to all sorts of comments and problems.  :/
