Overbreeding in this country is another topic and I believe there's a term for it, "whataboutery".
The truth is there's too many dogs and cats in the UK. There's an issue with removing dogs and cats because people want specific breeds or colours. Also charities on my rehome into their nearby area. There's also am issue with importation of foreign strays rather than developing local rehoming. Also there's countries that have serious street dog issues. These are not all stray dogs but family pets that the local habit is to kick your dog out during the day.
Then there is the kind of big white Knight coming into a country to rescue the poor animals from the cruelty of the nasty... There's often local charities but the Britishers come in and do it better because we're a nation of animal lovers. Let's not forget that we love our dogs and leave them for 8 hours while we're working, they have to fit around our lifestyles, we buy dogs on looks not suitability, we but cute little dogs then never train them creating little bundles of aggression. Yes, we're animal lovers alright with our own house in order.Â
Obviously Afghanistan is a special case but I do not think it was the guy's place to be the animal saviour in another country.
Then there's other issues with this story. There was a big media push in support of him that tbh he to advantage of. The truth I very much doubt was with him in this. The tweet of his wife on an empty military plane for example. The minister quoted ad saying they would not give priority to pets over people in an article about a private charter plane like one was directly referring to the other. There's less tabloidy papers reporting it correctly as minister says that about evacuation of pets on military evac plants which the passengers are in the hold. Then the animal guy coming back with the private charter civilian plane. Plus the issues of getting people to planes as it is. Likelihood is they won't get them there. And what about the donkeys? Then there's 68 staff plus 139 relatives. Good job they've got 250 capacity. Coukd that plane slot fit a military plane in where they cram a lot more in, or did at the beginning. I wonder if that's costing 100 human lives for the animals? Taliba aren't going around with hitlists for the animals.
I'm not against it but I do not think it's as simple as saving the animals and you're nasty if you're against it. There's the simple fact that this guy has raised a shootload of money to save what 200 odd animals. How many animals could be saved elsewhere with that money? A lot more I reckon. However it all goes well with the Afghanistan situation, in that it's all SNAFU over there. This is just another effed up thing with Afghanistan.
BTW I know an little about Colombian animal rescues. Americans are doing what Paul Farthing did in setting up rescue centres there and the importing the animals to their own country. However there a local animal rescue scene going on that is actually better than pet realise. Those good Americans are a little misguided and really would have done more raising money for the local charities. I got that from a British/Colombian/Portuguese mixed national, activists and dog rescuer. Apparently at their country bodega they keep seeming to get adopted by stray dogs. Apparently he goes for walks and treks and these dogs simply go with him. They also sort their own food out being first and foremost capable dogs. However Colombia has a network of zero termination animal sanctuary charities. That's what's needed but unlikely in Afghanistan.Â
BTW the ex soldier I heard was a sergeant not high up in the army at all. His only strength comes from public support for animals and the pr he n gets from that.Â
What ever peoples views on this, surely we should respect the bravery of the ex soldier, whose life has constantly been at risk since he stayed on in Afghanistan and whose commitment to his staff is very noble. He could have left by now if he wished.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Ummm. Quotes from the UK Defence Sec. "7 to 10 RAF planes are leaving a day. No planes are leaving empty." (But are they leaving at least nearly full?) Our air force is managing HOW MANY planes? Al Jazeera News reported 170 flights out of Kabul on the 15th Aug. Please tell me our politicians just forgot to mention a fleet of British Airways planes.
I think we respect soldiers because they risk their life for their and our country. They're out there so we don't have to is what I've once heard it described as. He's a civilian doing what he's doing for his own reasons which may also be worthy of respect. He went there to help rescue stray animals. Admirable but I think it's fair question whether he could have done more good for more animals closer to home. We're a nation of animal lovers but still cause harm, suffering and death to animals in this country in much greater numbers than he has helped in this country.
I wonder whether the people who go and set up animal rescues in foreign lands could do more good working with UK rescue charities to create links with people from those countries to set their own charities up. With all overseas charities set up by UK citizens, often resulting in exportation of strays to the UK, I wonder whether locals could have done better for themselves with training links to successful and long established UK animal charities. It's a give a man a fish eats for one day, give him the means to catch his own fish he never m his hungry sort of sites I guess
Because somebody wants them. And because it's a way to save the people who cared for them.
I know you don't like cats and dogs @Hostafan1 but do try and see beyond that and have a bit of empathy for those who do.Â
Rescue as many people as possible, but I'm sorry, importing unwanted animals from one country to another will never be even ON my list for emapthy. I'm sure there are many "animal lovers" who'd happily bring more stray dogs to this country and leave humans behind.

They were eligible with or without the animals. I believe the defence secretary or other minister has said so. Leave the animals bring the people. They're already leaving the donkeys. Are dogs and cats more worth saving than donkeys? I know they're impossible to fly out but the decision had been made to save what they could. If could only meant the humans that decision that pen bloke would have had to make too.
After my rant about printers and ink, I just had a letter through the post trying to bribe me into giving a 5* review to the ink supplier. I've reported it but from experience nothing will be done. Â
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
A charity pays for a plane to evacuate its staff and their families, all of whom were eligible to take up seats on government sponsored evacuation flights. So that’s additional seats freed up for more people on the government planes. Plus there are an extra 200 seats on the charity flight, paid for by the charity. Putting some rescued animals in the hold seems to be a fair exchange, and I don’t believe for a minute that releasing a landing slot for that plane will delay any other mercy missions. There are only a small number of animals coming, and this could be a morale boost for service personnel who had been upset at their treatment in Afghanistan. There must be a lot of servicemen who are feeling that all the sacrifices that have been made were in vain. Every small demonstration of humanity might help some of them.
