From I’m not buying any more roses, to oops, just bought half a dozen, we all know that one Marlorena 😆 Goodness the similarity of Gabriel Oak and Frilly Cuff is striking, but the latter has a very silly name, I’d have to call it something else. Filomena, perhaps.
I have been very much admiring your Veronica Marietta, does it need much water? It would look fantastic as a cooling element in my hot border, but I fear it would be far too hot and dry there.

I’ve finally caught up with all the new posts.. regarding the hidcote gardener’s comment.. I personally haven’t really come across anyone who doesn’t like roses.. some people fear the idea of growing them as they have a reputation of being high maintenance.. but for a public garden that hires professional gardeners surely there’s no excuse…? One of the best things about roses is the sheer variety - not just the looks but also the scent, I have yet to come across another family of plants that can produce such diverse range of scents.. there’s something for everyone
I must say that Pirouette looks like Eustacia Vye’s long lost sister.. and frilly cuff being Gabriel Oak’s long lost brother.. I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart by just looking at the pictures..! It’s interesting for me to learn that there are so many non DA roses that share similar characteristics.. I think I just have a little phobia of venturing out of my comfort zone and into the unknown.. And I do love DA’s perfectly coiffed catalogue..
.. we shall wean you off them gradually Adrian... it takes time these things..
@Victoria Sponge ..thank you... I have a couple of interesting plants in that pebble beach garden coming along.. should be in flower soon..
@Nollie ...blame Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen for the name... I didn't like it either, but now I look at this rose, I actually think it's well named... some of the blooms are perfect rosette form, with frilly edges, just like a frilly cuff.. I also just love the strong colour, it's a real standout.. and there is a light scent, rather pleasant.. .. did I say I wasn't buying more roses? somehow I've forgotten.. I must say the garden centre at PB is outstanding, I singled out a number of roses that caught my eye, including the rambler 'Gardenia'.. a red climber 'Red New Dawn' ['Etendard'].. and a shrub rose called 'Amelie Nothomb' - I'm strongly tempted to go back to get this one.. but there were so many... the potted range is extensive and not an Austin in sight, which makes a change really.
I have 'Smarty' and 'St. Nicholas' ordered for bare roots this autumn as there were no potted options.. the 'Wild Rover' stand was empty so we asked a staff member who promptly went out back and brought me two to choose from, one in flower and the other with buds... he was so helpful as were all the staff.. plus an extensive range of perennials and shrubs..
Veronica 'Marietta' is a real winner for me.. the foliage is dark glossy and perfect and the plants need no attention, standing up to all weathers.. the blue is just getting darker.. this appears to be a superlative plant so far and I'm thinking of extending it to a larger spread, maybe 7 plants or so, for a more prominent feature..
..they also had 'Darlow's Enigma' growing in the gardens.. a rose not currently available UK..
I just love your trolley arrangement @Marlorena! It is probably a good thing that the rose showcase/retail gardens of DA and PB are too far. I am astounded how lovely the gardens at PB are, it hadn't occured to me that they would be. Now I'm wondering what there might be in the Oxfordshire, Bucks/Berks,West of London area. That was a very good deal at an actual GC, another place I haven't thought to visit for roses but now you mention it I do remember the last one I went to years ago had some. I was only buying shrubs and annuals back then, you have really opened my eyes.
You asked me ages ago to report on Pearl Drift; not a fan. It has mildewy foliage but does bloom regardless. I find the flowers are too big to open fully in the clusters so are too squashed to be a beautiful shape. The clusters aren't attractive because there are always some browning petals or at the moment very pink spotted petals and blotchy pink buds.
@Tack ... I've had Pearl Drift twice now and each time I'm fed up with it browning after rain... it did look nice at Mannington in June.. 3 in a line here, although there were more plants further along not in shot, like a drift.. probably about 7 in all.
...do try and get to Beales sometime one summer if over this way... it's well worth it.. but I know it's quite a trip.. it's a pity the RNRs gardens at St. Albans closed down.. that would be nearer for you I think..
Thanks Marlorena, I will keep an eye out for Marietta, I’ve been wanting to try a Veronica for a while, so nothing ventured… I can only sigh wistfully at all those lovely rose gardens to visit in the UK. One day!

'Nye Bevan'.. I feel the scent has been understated on this rose.. it's rather lovely, of citrus and myrrh.. and quite strong on a warm day.. I'm enjoying this rose for first season.. 'Marie Pavie'.. looking half decent.. it's been slow.. 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'.. 'Florence Ducher' despite b.s it churns out the blooms regardless..
'Marie van Houtte'... 'Mutabilis'... 'Duchesse de Brabant'.. 'Special Brother'... 'Scented Garden'... C. 'The Vagabond'... Alonsoa 'Rebel'.. C. 'Margaret Hunt'.. Thalictrum rochebrunianum.. potted Euphorbia.. Lavender x intermedia 'Gros Bleu'.. fans out like a Peacock..
