Interesting, many thanks, of all the lovely roses you have shown, Queen of Denmark is my favourite, so good to see it topping your list. On the other hand, Golden Beauty is not a winner for me so far, rather a disappointment in fact, but more on that on the other thread..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Ok I'm going to try posting again. This is my first post. I signed up because of your lovely garden photos Marlorena.. I'm still reading through this thread. There are so many pages of lovely photos and information. I wanted to ask you if you can post some recent photos of Ancient Mariner in brighter light? I'm trying to understand the color of this rose. I know it may be different because you are in England and I am in the USA on the East coast. You had mentioned it takes three years to see what it can do so I want to make sure I have a good chance of being happy with this rose before investing three years. Does Ancient Mariner fade to white like Olivia Austin does? Does Ancient Mariner usually have the darker pink center similar to Eden rose?
Also I'm looking for a fragrant pink rose for a small arbor. I love Eden but hoping for a fragrant similar rose? Suggestions appreciated by all. Thank you!
@Razzyrose Hi and thanks so much for checking out my garden... and for your generous comments.. I've managed to persuade several U.S. gardeners to plant The Ancient Mariner over the past few years, it's a magnificent rose when established and left to grow to a decent size which for me here was about 6 x 6 feet... it does not enjoy hard pruning or too much control, it destroys the character totally..
Unfortunately my rose was planted way too close to a fence, which got replaced last winter, I either had to cut the rose to ground level or take it out, so it went... the blooms do not fade to white, but a light pink.. the scent at first was spicy, like coriander, later it became sweeter, very pleasant scent.. large blooms, the buds are beautiful too, shapely and pale pink and a bonus is the Spring juvenile foliage, which is a slate bluey/grey colour mixed with mahogany, lovely in the spring garden..
Like so many Austins, it demands generous feeding and if it gets regular moisture at the roots, may establish quicker than it did for me..
I'll post some photos later, I'm on a different computer right now.. no pics on this one..
..as an alternative to Eden, I wonder if 'Laguna' would suit? it's a darker colour but better fragrance and suitable for east coast U.S.
..I would recommend 'Jasmina' if it wasn't so thorny..
..for a gorgeous shrub rose with sweet scent, 'St. Ethelburga' is one I recommend having seen it growing in a garden here, and I know it's obtainable where you are..
..an east coast rose gardener I know about is Marina, she used to garden in Virginia, but now in Florida... I consult her photos and other details when needed.. she had all these..
.some photos of The Ancient Mariner... I've lightened them up a bit as my previous camera took rather dark photos... this rose is similar to 'Geoff Hamilton' but larger in every way..
@Marlorena , after looking at stunning photos of your TAM, I got this rose too. My plant is still very young but I have a photo which shows colour of flower. The form can be better than this, but colour in shade is quite close to true in this photo.
@newbie77 ..very nice, coming along well.. the bloom there is not quite as full as it should be, but August blooms can be a bit off..
.. I might as well put some more pics up.. ..first 3 of 'Cornelia' a hybrid musk rose.. 'Special Brother'.. 'Lucky'.. 'Scented Garden'.. Hydrangea 'Magical Colourdream'.. I think these flower heads turn a shade of green..
Thank you for your responding Marlorena. I'm sorry that Ancient Mariner was in the way in your garden. Yours was amazing. Maybe you'll find a place to grow it again one day. I will check those rose suggestions out. Jasmina is already on my roses to check. I've read quite a few comments about it only blooming once. I will look for Marina's posts too.
