sorry for the late reply.. I’ve been working this weekend. Thanks so much for those suggestions.. I found most of them on Amazon and I should receive them by next week.. something to look forward on my day off! That should tie me over till my roses start to flower in May 🤗
  • I've got a very big DA New Dawn that's going to have to be moved. It's been in its spot for over 10 years and gets enormous during the summer months. It used to be on a large trellis but that's rotted away and can't be replaced because of new access needed to the swimming pool.

How easy/difficult/impossible does anyone think it will be to get it all out in one piece and successfully replant it? Will I need to cut off all the growth?

It's a lovely rose, such a shame to lose it but it really can't stay where it is any longer without causing problems and not looking it's best.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

...you won't get it all out in one piece, so just dig around it and sever any long tap roots aiming to get at least a foot or two of root left... you will be bare rooting the rose, so there's rarely much of a rootball to be had..    leave the rest of the roots behind, they're not worth bothering over..  make it easy for yourself, there's no need to attempt to get too much out..
.. soak the rose in bucket... prepare new hole... cut back top growth to about 3 feet.. and wait until it shoots out again, then you may have to prune back a bit more to where the new good shoots are..
...some bone meal or mycorrhizal [not both] would help, but I don't always use either..

..effectively you are starting out again with the rose... there's still time to do this even in your area I should think..

Thanks to you lot I am desperately seeking a space for Sweet Syrie and not having much joy at the moment .  I have never put a rose in a pot but have a large one going spare at the  moment so this could be the first time.  It's lurking in my shopping basket and my finger has hovered over buy now on a few occasions.

Ugh, drippy, wet and cold out there today, but at least we have had some rain, even though it’s stopped my construction of a new fence in it’s tracks.

Update on Mutabilis, not looking great, @Omori and @Marlorena, lost another two canes to dieback and the tentative new foliage it had started to put out has all fallen off, the rain wasn’t that heavy! I had no idea it was so very sensitive. Here are the stubby remains, sans dead bits:

..well it's still alive by the looks of it, I'm surprised it's not shooting out though... I can see a yellowing short stub that's dying off, but the rest seems ok..

..not rubbing it in, but mine is like this right now... my job is to keep the dog off it as this is his trampling area..
..it's been rather cold here of late, so not much growth on anything but getting milder this week...

Your Sweet Syrie is gorgeous @JessicaS, I think it looks better than the promo pic. Glad I’ve got it on order 👍

@Nollie Yours is looking similar to mine, did you get it from TCL like I did? Where did yours come from @Marlorena, if you don’t mind me asking?

...either Trevor White or Peter Beales, I can't remember exactly which one, but either of those... I know I would have tried TW first, but can't recall if he was out of stock and I had to go to Beales...

..just to add, I've never had problems with this rose before, it's always taken... I do wonder about TCL sometimes... cheap, but occasionally we take a chance..

    Hi @Marlorena,
looks like I was mistaken, there are also thorns on the main stem upward from about 18". Thorns are small and quite widely spaced along the stem, perhaps 1/ ft or summat like that.
I am assuming this is good news...
and lots of new shoots opening up. Any clues here?

Just another day at the plant...
