The New ROSE Season 2021...

  • That's good to know @cooldoc.  I wanted to do other stem cuttings but I thought they would be too thin but maybe worth a chance this autumn.

Love the Wisteria photos.  We had one for a few years that did really well over an arch but 2 years ago it just seemed to die and then last year it sprouted 2 very spindly shoots from the base about 3 ft high and this year nothing.  I think I may well dig it up and put one of my climbing roses there instead or a clematis.

@edhelka and anyone else interested, I just read this on the MacPlants website:

Our mail order is closed at the moment but will re-open at midnight on Wednesday 14th April. We expect it to be exceptionally busy once again and we may have to close again soon after so our advice is to order quickly after we open.

@Omori :) Thanks! So the plan is to prepare the basket and checkout just after midnight :) Crazy.

Thanks @edhelka, yes obviously just a coincidence I’ve never received a shorty before.

This year, online nurseries are operating normally over here, or I should say in France since that’s my main source. There does seem to be a shortage of plants though. Of my last order of 16 (allegedly in stock) perennials, only five were delivered and two of them are showing no sign of life. Most of the no-shows were for my hot border, so that’s two years running it’s going to look gappy, especially as I have also lost a few dahlias there to the big freeze.

Local garden centres are looking rather sparse too and the summer bulbs usually available are conspicuously absent. The knock-on effect of closures, staff on furlough and other covid issues from last year, I guess. Hopefully the GCs will get further stocks in the summer.

@Nollie, if you like zinnia, they are good annual filler until perennials are setup. Very good germination from seed

  • I posted this on the main plants section, but thought good idea to post here too.
Very quick question please.  I was given ‘The Lark Ascending’ as a bare root and planted it approx. 5/6 weeks ago.  I planted it in a position which I now know is totally wrong as it gets too much shade (I know Lark Ascending tolerates some shade but this will be way too shady).  Is it ok to move it now and anything I need to do?  Thanks in advance.

...yes move it now... it's been much too cold to worry about this too much, so just get out there and move it... water it in well, it will soon get going again this time of year..

...it also helps in such cases, that you spray water over the canes, like with a hose or somesuch, just to keep them  hydrated while it recovers in the new position...  I do so every few days until I see signs of recovery... just a light sprinkling of water.. it's important the green canes do not dry out in the process..
