    @Libbynugget, welcome to rose thread. It must have been hard work to rejuvenate that rose. Your arch is very beautiful.

    Looking forward to seeing photos of your garden.

    I forgot to mention I also grow the climbing version of 'Graham Thomas'...I assume going off your posts you are considering that also. I'm no expert, but all I can say is that I've had it in the ground for about 5 years now, and last year was the first year it actually did anything, probably pushing out about ten blooms over the course of the summer...but when they come they are absolute beauties. I hoping it's framework is there now for this coming summer and many more blooms will ensue...but it's an absolute magnet for severe BS and needs constant attention.

    ..oh that's a shame, not my experience at all with 'Graham Thomas'..

    @peteS
    ..you asked where I get my obelisks from.. well I get cheapish ones, and they're quite thin, but they do the job and have lasted me years.. I buy the Parisian type at the bottom of the page.. but I also have other types.. only one I have is quite expensive which I did not get from this place..

    ..re those two ramblers... plus Veilchenbleu and Violette..

    ..first thing to mention is that they are all virtually thornless.. Violette in particular..

    'Rose-Marie Viaud'... I grew threw a crap apple.. the small blooms are mauve/purple/violet, a pleasing range of colours.. quite attractive but the bloom season is short..   nice when in full bloom as they all are but too short a season for me.. not enough scent to remark on..

    'Bleu Magenta'.. thing about this rose is the large leafy foliage, which is a feature.. grows very quickly and spread all of 15 - 20 feet width along a fence in next to no time.. dark purple blooms in large clusters that retained the colour well... brief season again though, all over in a flash as I recall.. without any repeat..  so I did not get any blooms on either, as I remember, in the first season... perhaps the odd cluster.  Absolutely no scent..

    Everybody loves Veilchenbleu but I would rather have Purple Skyliner because it grows half the size and flowers into October, even if there is a mixture of pink and greyish tones amongst the purple..  'PS' does have thorns though..

    I've not grown Violette.. or Perennial Blue..

    @Marlorena

    Thanks for that Marlorena, it was one of the suppliers I had looked at, but they looked a bit flimsy, but seeing as you find them OK I will have another look. The other site I have been considering is GAP.

    Thanks @Marlorena, that’s really helpful. Repeat blooming is not essential, but a very short bloom season would be a disappointment,

    I wondered about Purple Skyliner, but perhaps too small to cover a large (3x3 metre) arch? I also suspect that or Veilchenblau could look more pink here. Maybe a yellow or even a white with a purple clematis through would work better. Plenty of time to dither, won’t be getting the arch for at least three months - birthday request!

    re 'Highworth' it's the rose I am considering and which depends on the new DAs. Yes, I had exactly the same thought about 'The Albrighton Rambler', maybe it's too similar. But it has that feel of some wichuranas, multifloras, and their crosses (very large clusters of blooms on long lax laterals), which TAR doesn't have. I would certainly love to see more photos of it or see it in person somewhere.

    Has anyone any experience of planting roses in the same place. I’ve just removed Mayflower and Susan Ellis Williams. I want to put Chandon Beauty and Eustacia Vye in the same place. I plan to add some farmyard manure and FBB before planting. I know it’s not recommended to do this without replacing lots of soil but wondered what you all thought

    ..how long have the other roses been in position?

    @edhelka
    ...I cannot see the foliage clearly but I have a suspicious mind..  there is no breeder's code or any information about it anywhere that I can find.. Have you found any at all?... If not, why is that do you think?.. I mean, it looks a brilliant rose, whoever bred it would be very happy wouldn't you say?...
