  • Lark ascending, planted in autumn. For a wilder part of the garden in a bit of shade.

Paul Neyron, planted in autumn. It’s hiding with spring planting.

Gentle Hermione, planted a week or so ago, I just threw some more roughly made home compost round. Everything seems so dry, but it is too early to start watering.

I received a DA bare root Malvern Hills today and it is a runty little thing, scraping of the barrel, I should think.

@Mr. Vine Eye, if that 4.5 ft rose is MW, then that is pretty good. I wish mine become that size one day. In Kew gardens, out of whole bed of mw, none were over 2ft.

@Fire - sorry about the dahlias. I lost all of my dwarf ones this year and I really loved the colours of the specific ones I'd saved. One is a potential recovery job.

I'm sure the Malvern Hills won't be runty for long!

Ok, thanks anyway @Victoria Sponge. I guess it’s going to take a while for the gunge sump bit at the bottom to fill up, so hopefully it’s a once a year job to disconnect it and hose it out. I really want some rain now to try it out!

@Littlegarden I have been watering for about a month now, those cold, northerly winds are really desiccating. Getting some water in the ground first thing in the morning really helps your plants cope. If it’s really dry I would start if you can.

The new growth on my Munsteads is much redder than in either of your photos @Mr. Vine Eye and the habit totally different. If it is, wonder what on earth they are doing to get that kind of height?!

@Fire, sorry about your Dahlias and your MH being runty.

@newbie77 - I think I'm exaggerating as it was raised up a bit in the bed. But it was definitley 3.5-4ft and obviously that's just after pruning. When I saw it in flower it was big and bushy.

@Nollie - it definitley looked like mine in th flesh. I'll check for definite when we visit in summer!

But one of the roses in that bed is definitley Munstead Wood because I saw it in flower and smelled it and saw a name sign - and it was big and robust.

    I didn't dream it I swear! 😁

  • Sorry to hear about your dahlias and new rose @Fire, how disappointing. Are you keeping the rose? If so, I hope it picks up.

I will keep the Malvern, but it was about half the size, with half the roots, of my previous one.

Same, my MW is totally different...I’d post a pic of mine but no matter what I do, it’s upside down 🤨 Tried cropping, editing, etc...when are they going to fix this issue 😑
