@Mr Vine Eye, we drove to a GC today, about a 15 Minute trip and consider that local? We have a choice of 3 but the other two are right the other side of the city and pain to get to.
I grew Mme Alfred Carriere but it was too vigorous and grew too quickly for me so in the end I took it out. Shame as it was a lovely rose. Hope you have big high wall!!!
It's been a lovely weekend here after a couple of chilly starts. Feels like we have turned a corner into Spring.
Some good news on the rose front, Fru Dagmar Hastrup which had been at stick status now has some tiny red blobs of growth. Countess of Wessex, which I chopped back to one and a half canes due to die back now has a split on one side of the half cane but fortunately has a new shoot lower down. It's on my watch list, I don't think it is getting much/any sunlight at this time of year and at that height and the area is a little dank. When it's at full size it will be in sun most of the day but might have to mollycoddle it for now.
I made an amendment to my rose wish list 2021, I think I won't buy either Imogen or Nye Bevan. I think I want something orange for best combination with the other roses in that area, now thinking Raymond Carver. I spent my plant budget up to date on fancy hellebores anyway and now need to start saving for some big pots.
@Mr. Vine Eye in terms of fragrance England’s rose wins for me.. I’ve had the pleasure of sniffing all three when I went to DA’s garden two years ago. Darcy has almost no fragrance, Princess Anne is medium but it doesn’t stand out.. England’s rose however had a powerful spicy fragrance - and the blooms seemed to withstand the rain quite well as I went on a rainy day (and the fragrance still presented itself so well despite being wet) - it’s next on my wish list together with Lochinvar.
Anyone else get irritated when people don't bother to respond back to their own posts?
I'm not talking about on this Rose thread.
I mean when someone asks a question on the general forum and then you never know whether they've come back and seen it, followed the advice or done something different.
I tend to try and give helpful advice, I often do quite detailed step by step instructions, even use their photos and literally draw it for people to make it as clear as possible (maybe the teacher part of me!)
When you've gone to the effort of trying to help someone it would be good courtesy for the person to at least acknowledge that they've seen it. Whether they choose to follow it or not.
I mean, I'm not doing for thanks, I usually only bother for posts about things I'm interested in, like espalier questions, roses and pruning...or battery powered lawn mowers.
But it's just rude.
Treating real people like a search engine.
Type in a question, read the results and then just buh-gger off
Apologies if I've ever done that to anyone else by the way! 😂

Hi Lizzie, that sounds perfect for me, but I don’t know about @REN_AmateurG!
Here it has about a 10 metre stretch of scrappy, non-flowering honeysuckle hedge to spread up and through, the wilder the better. Did it establish quickly then? I’m hoping I don’t have to wait years for it to take off, but I’m braced for that will all my new climbers.
I gave my roses a good foliar spraying of seaweed in an attempt to wash off a big dump of Saharan dust-laden rain and do them some good at the same time. Partially successful but now they are covered in hard water deposits too. Hoping for some clean rain soon.
I have a tiny bud on Francis Dubreuil! Others in the garden looking good despite the dirty rain...

Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Mr Vine Eye, I get what you mean, happens quite often. Hopefully the knowledge still is useful to them or someone else who might be searching that question, assuming search works properly...
Looking lovely Nollie, I have a newish Mme Alfred Carriere as well, 2nd year but I moved it last year which probably set things back a bit. We’ll see how it does this year 🤞 It has a wide 8’ fence plus an arch and top of shed if it wants to go for world domination.
@Mr. Vine Eye I think people are often in a panic when they rock up asking questions. Some will have forgotten where they asked them. Tech gives people the attention span of fleas, I think. Also the vast majority of people will be reading and posting from mobile phones (utterly nuts in my opinon). This makes everything harder, smaller and more fiddly.
Best to lower your expectations dramatically and offer advice where you like doing it - regardless of the outcome. Do what floats your boat. Enjoy your day.

It's not in our town so not local. We know of people who have been stopped and told to turn around heading the same way.

I agree with Adrian, Darcy Bussell has no fragrance, but I find I forgive her that, and the blackspot.

That was when I asked a question but made sure I came back and updated it to let people know what I'd done and how it worked.
Hopefully will be useful for people in the future as at the time I asked I couldn't find anything online for my problem at all!
