A nice cool start to the day, so decided to pot up some spare Lobelia.

Next I checked on the Little Gem in my Peat and Peat Free seed mix comparison.

At these early stages Peat is winning but we'll see what happens.

And the Spring Onions have shot up in no time at all.

  • Oh my word!
My family arrived yesterday, wanting to do jobs for me. It was like having 3 whirlwinds flying about. My son and son in law cleared the greenhouse of staging, planted my tomatoes into their final pots and put them in the greenhouse while my daughter spring cleaned the conservatory. The boys also assembled the two benches I bought earlier in the year. They are so competitive! They had a race to see who could finish first, without losing any bits and not having too many bits left over.
Then we went to a local hostelry for a meal.
The only thing I was allowed to do was demonstrate how I liked to plant my tomatoes and provide cold drinks.
The kids have a day off "Mum" duty today. They are participating in an open water distance swim. Two miles, just for something to do. They will be swimming in wet suits because the water is still so cold. How did I produce such maniacs.
I am going to quietly get on with watering today. It is overcast and cool so ideal weather.

I think I'm going to sow some biennials in trays (will keep them on the windowsill while it's so hot outside), and add some stuff to the compost heap, maybe give it a bit of a mix.. There's a small chance of rain/thunderstorm this afternoon but I'll believe it when I see it.

@GWRS I decided for Seaweed which turned out turquoise 😊
I’m just back from an Open Day at the farm in Cirencester. Everything is grown only there.

@JennyJ I sowed once foxgloves in June and planted them out in September but none of them survived the winter. I still try to find a way to get foxgloves grown and flower.

    I my garden.

@Simone_in_Wiltshire if I'm sowing foxgloves I do them around midsummer which is when the established plants are starting to shed seed, but I find that foxgloves are one of those plants that do so much better just left to get on with self-sowing. I've got seed to sow of a new-to-me Lunaria, "Corfu Blue", some wallflowers, some sweet williams and some verbascum.

My one mixed border hedge had started creeping forwards so, being mindful of any nests, I tied up/back a few branches (Red Robin and Hydrangea) and lightly trimmed the front of some Yew and Pyracantha. Looks a bit tidier now. Bits everywhere though!

Now to decide whether to water tonight or do a rain dance…
My garden and I live in South Wales.
  • @JennyJ I will try again the let-them-do method. I tried it 2 years ago and they also failed. I have grown some from seeds in Spring and planted them outside in May, but the need longer to establish. I suppose they will flower next year.

    I my garden.

Dug the border out between the pond and grass, divided and moved some plants that needed moved to fill the border. Some are sulking but been well watered so should be ok.
