Anyone done any gardening today? Part 5

  • Went and had my Covid and flu jabs. Both arms feel quite bruised now but I was impressed with the setup at the surgery. Really efficient and quick. I put another two apples through the dehumidifier and got a load of washing dried.

I spent an hour and a half in the garden. Carried on extending my weeding of the path and bank in the dog's pee corner. Several years ago I planted a restoria in the garden near where the dog visits and noticed early on in the year it was looking rather sick. A lot of dieback. I decided to leave it alone and see what happened. Now there is a huge amount of dead stems but also some new stems with foliage have appeared and some new shoots at ground level. I am going to clear some of the dead stems out but leave about 50% as protection for the winter. I think the weather during the last year has affected it badly.
My first nerine flower has opened, a lovely scarlet, Cardinal Wolsey.
It looks as if my very pale lemon Angel's Fishing Rods, dierama,  has been killed by the weather. It was always a miffy grower and the excessive wet has finally been too much for it.
What wonderful gardening weather, I wish I could work for longer

Arm not as sore today. Didn't get jab from Dr's as they were full both Saturdays,  but haven't been told when anymore vaccine will be available,  so for the second year arranged to have it via the chemist. Also just been told to book the covid so having that in two weeks.
Plans for today, when the fog lifts, is clear the apple Tree and a few plants that have now finished.

Did do apple, not much to keep. Binned outside tomatoes with blight, late getting it this year, and a few weeds. Hubby did lawns yesterday,  and now bin is full, it was emptied Friday!

We're the same as you two, bins emptied last Thursday, now nearly full again. I cut the inside of our front hedge today - well, as far as I could reach. By the time I pulled the ivy off at ground level, we gained about a metre of extra parking space! Haven't kept it as tidy as usual, due to my recent health issues and it's not a job that OH is keen on doing.

An hour and a half is not bad going @Joyce Goldenlily, that's about my limit before needing a 'sit down'. I don't stress about it however, there's always manana!

  • Managed another spell clearing the wood bark covered path beside the wall, filled a wheelbarrow, piled high with grass, plus a second one. Looks more of a mess as I now have to go over it again with a hand fork to remove stubborn roots.
Have arranged to have my refuse collected from my house, because of my great age and health condition, instead of me having to put the rubbish bags in the back of my car and driving them down our lane to leave on the verge. Great trumpeting from the local council as we are all being given wheelie bins and food collection receptacles, one for indoors and one for outside. We still have to use the disgusting bags for recycling. They are like mini dumper bags in lurid colours. I do not envy the men having to drag my wheelie bin all the way up the lane and back.
  • Nothing was done in the garden yesterday.
By the time I had walked the dog, gone to B&Q to buy a new spryer, none in stock, been to the hairdresser, visited B&M to find a sprayer, none in stock, visited Pets for Home to stock up on dog and cat food and driven home I was bushed.
Will have to see if I can find a sprayer online.

Gosh, that does sound a busy day @Joyce Goldenlily.

I dug up a line of plants that were overhanging the kerbstone where the new tarmac is going to be laid at the end of the month. Thought it best to remove them away from diggers, wheelbarrows and clumsy builder's feet! Have left them soaking overnight in buckets as I was too tired afterwards and will pot them up tomorrow, weather permitting. Undecided whether the old straggly, dead in the middle, winter flowering heather is worth trying to save though?

  •  I managed an hour in the garden. Picked the last of the apples and barrowed the weeds from the path to the bonfire.
Picked a handful of raspberries, what a treat for breakfast.
It took me ages to untangle a string of solar lights from an Acer.
I also ordered a sprayer from online. Looks like it is going to take a couple of weeks to arrive. Bang go my plans to make the most of the dry weather.
Lizzie, is it worth pruning out the dead wood of your heather and tying the outside growth up to cover the empty patch? I suppose it depends on how much growth there is left, if any.
