I took advantage of the hot and dry weather to paint a tall wrought iron side gate, it's taken me a day and a half - the half this morning (under a sun umbrella) to touch up all the bits I missed yesterday! It's a pig of a job but thank goodness for Hammerite. I really need to plant out some ammi majus, now a foot high, but the ground is baked solid so might have to just put them in a big pot.

Just cut the grass. It's still too hot for me out there.

Out in the garden at 6.25am, only way l could get anything done before it got too hot.
Dug out a Brachyglottis,  cut back a laurel that was threatening to take over, and pulled out some foxgloves that had just about finished.
Dug in some topsoil and chicken manure pellets. Planted 3 red heleniums , one pink salvia "Blind Faith"and 2 blue salvia "Blue note". Chopped everything up for green waste bin, deadheaded the roses and planted Miscanthus "Adagio" in a large pot. Watered tomatoes, baskets and newly planted stuff.

Monster pruning session in progress - there's a nice breeze today so it doesn't feel so hot. Tea break now, then out to finish off and feed it all through the shredder.
@GWRS, I have one of those, very useful for smaller clipping and trimming jobs.

  • Rather than gardening I'm calling it dusting the soil!its so dry!! My well that we found last year which was so brilliant had now ran dry!!! Anyone heard what the long term forecast is for this year?I heard June could be even hotter

Same here @the tidy gardener no rain here here in weeks, none forecast for the near future.  Most of my time is taken up trying too keep small seedlings in small pots alive, too small to spray with hose so need to be soaked in containers........there are talks with of a water shortages here already, so expecting another hose ban this year

Distributed the nettle purin this morning.  Emptied the barrel as we are not allowed to have stagnant water around for breeding mosquitoes (although we live right by a non-moving stream - sort of open drain for excess rainwater.)  I should have a leafy garden in the next few weeks!
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

That was me @GWRS - glad you like the Bosch Isio.

I emptied out the last of the tulips pots and put the bulbs in the greenhouse to dry out for a day or two. Then I planted the Ammi in those pots, using the same compost again. I figured I could just give them a tomato feed occasionally if they need it. Watered the carrot seedlings and seed bed, think I've got the rocket germinating.

Planted out some more seedlings, watered all the containers.
Rosemary cuttings my neighbour gave me last week are no longer dropping and seemed to have perked up. Early days but I’m taking it as a good sign.
Salad leaves look like they’re germinating, hoping the chamomile grows up a bit because it’s supposed to shade the salad from the worst of the sun.
Nice to actually have things growing and not spending all my time breaking concrete.
