Gurnsey D , glad to hear your back in circulation , been to allotment today , mega burn 🔥 of cuttings , sedums , clematis , herbs , chrysanthemums & Jureslum artichokes A bit more gardening tomorrow
Outside doing some cutting back. Had to come in for a minute as its blowing a gale and feels bitterly cold out there, never mind them saying its 9° it is not!!
A bit late with this post but I finally finished cleaning the greenhouse windows on a rare dry day on Thursday. Its not that it's that big I did the outside ages ago never got round to the inside till now. Surprised at how "green" they were. Cleaned and checked the propagator too so I should be all set for the seed sowing season when it comes.
The lovely weather spurred me on to spend a couple of hours in the garden. Re-potted Bears Breeches x 4, Geum ....... Sunset x 6, and more Oxeye Daisies today. I also started pruning some of the finished growth on Michaelmas Daisies, Hyper.......yellow flower and red berry perennial and some sedums and ferns. I was going to wait until the Spring, although most of these plants have new growth on them already and I will be busy with seed sowing by March/April anyway.
With 4 layers of clothes on (!) I raked up soggy hydrangea leaves so bulbs could grow better, cut back lavender and catmint (a bit late I know) and weeded most of the front border. OH has mysteriously lost the bottom metal pole off the hi-reach hedge lopper which we can't find at all but it's bound to be in the garden somewhere. He also tried his hand at laying some hazel branches across a gap in front hedge, so I hope they'll survive!
Have managed to prune the apples, pear and quince trees. Next on the list are the black and red currants. It is so wet underfoot, not a chance of getting onto the soil. Walked around my patch and tidied up blown pots etc. Weeds haven't stopped growing, lovely to see new buds and shoots emerging everywhere, as long as the weather does not turn really cold to kill off the new growth.
Have sown broad beans, onions, Traditionally sown on New Years Day, chilli, sweet peppers (I get caught out every year by not planting them early enough and they do like a long growing period) and All Year Round cauliflower, also sweet peas. Have a selection of flower seeds that need early sowing as well but haven't got around to them yet.
Finished setting up replacement water but on allotments. I was going to try mending the leaking one but Wi*es are doing one for £20 so it hardly seemed worth the effort. Put 4 cans of water in from other buts to add a bit of weight as the wind was blowing the new one off the stand. With heavy rain expected I expect it will be nearly full by midweek. Pulled some beetroot, then the drizzle started so retreated home for lunch.
I did a bit more potting up of seedlings with good strong roots and at least 4 leaves - mostly Geum and have a few more trays to pot up yet. OH shredded collected twigs from recent stormy weather - made 4 empty peat bags of them.
