I rejigged my beds a few weeks ago, and finally got round to moving my perennials (asters, salvias, persicarias etc) around within them, and planting ornamental grasses in between. I had to do it now as I want to plant spring bulbs, which I'll hopefully get round to mid-week (need a couple of days to potentially move stuff around again!)
I've ended up with oodles of surplus plants, as usual. Loads of Geranium 'Ann Thompson', which I didn't realise was so nice smelling.
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
I should have got out in the garden as it's been sunny and dry again today, but by the time we said goodbye to the friend who's been staying the weekend and walked to get the paper, it was then coffee and cake time! I did have more bulbs delivered so I'm hoping to plant them tomorrow.
Yes I think so too! After the same regime this morning I did venture out to plant up some Iris reticulate 'Cantab' a very fiddly job in small terracotta pots and 2 larger bowls. It is extremely windy and very cold today so gardening didn't last long. Only another 225 bulbs to plant when they arrive!
I removed and dug out a three year old ivy yesterday, it didn't occur to me when I planted it that it would escape through the fence into my neighbour's conifer hedge (stupid, I know). There's still a sprig of it waving out the top of the hedge but I hope it isn't one of those plants that keep appearing. Will keep an eye on my side.
To do all this I had to move some of my logs and stumps and the spider chalets I made from stacked roof tiles, bricks and etc. Felt slightly guilty but hopefully the things'll have time to re-home. I re-piled the stuff today and noticed most of the snail mounds on the logs had already dissipated so they must have found new shelter. I intend to create an ivy wall at the end of my coalshed type outbuilding as penance, I should be able to maintain that as it's easily accessible. It should look nice too🤔
Started scooping leaves out the pond, but almost every one had a pond creature stuck on it so I chucked them back in and went inside for a brew.
We re-vamped our green wall yesterday. We went to a GC in Enfield, to get extra Violas & winter Pansies. We bought 6 packs of them, 8 outdoor cyclamen, and (not for the wall) 3 huge pot mum Chrysanthemum. The latter were being sold off for £1 each ridiculous price couldn't say no. The whole lot was less then £25. I am always a bit conflicted at this place, its a bit pile it high flog it cheap but there are some real bargains there, the range is limited but if they have what you need at the time then you cant beat the prices. We do support other smaller places too.
I have not done any gardening recently as work commitments etc but have spent some time and money on lots of bare root roses for two new beds that are being created in readiness to plant out!
Yesterday and today have both been dry (though there was a touch of frost last night), so I was able to try to mow the front lawns for the first time since we moved here. It's been an exceptionally wet autumn so the grass was very long when we arrived a fortnight ago - the local "grass man" was supposed to have kept it under control but couldn't compete with the weather. Our little electric mower struggled manfully on the highest setting this afternoon... by the time it was too dark to see, the grass was three quarters "shorn" and I'd collected 46 grass boxes full of mowings...
Tomorrow is forecast wet. The final quarter will have to wait...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
An afternoon in the garden but not one to enjoy , dug a small trench across a flower beds and back lawn so that over flowing sewage from next door can flow more easily into stream at side of garden . There garden looks and smells horrendous
