Emptied greenhouse of over wintering tubs so it could have a good clean, ready to fill from the conservatory full of plants. ( Had to catch the resident frog and keep it safe until done, it is now back in and I hope happy) Temperature in there is between 7 to 30° so am itching to put the toms and cucumbers in. While I was washing it down, hubby made me an outside bench, isn't he a jem.
Went to allotment this morning , o/h put some seeds in ground and of course watered I sorted out the pile of wood I have , ready for staining to make some cages to cover various items
Hoping to go on Monday weather permitting A few jobs at home tomorrow Enjoy the Garden
More hand weeding of the meadow area, it's really showing the small meadow flowers off to their best. Cleaned up the heucharras they were looking very shabby. Laid more stone around the pond edge and trimmed the liner back. Have started weeding out the thousands of fennel seedlings we have, I hadn't expected this on such a scale, I will save some to move to other beds but will collect seed from now on to save on this job. A good look round and decided that today's flower of the day was the ajuga, we have lots spread about and the vivid almost electric blue looked fantastic in the sunlight today
@purplerallim is that your potting shed? It is exactly the same as mine, except mine is brown.
Not a lot done in the garden today, did mow and put some stuff on the compost heap. Most of the day doing other things but still outside, the sun came out after lunch so was pleasant out. Looking forward to a very lazy day tomorrow, back to work in the garden on Monday.
Watered the front garden in the morning, later than intended. My 6 new asparagus crowns were delivered so soaked those for an hour and then planted them in a new bed. I don't think it's big enough but will have to do. Watered them in very thoroughly and then mulched them around the crowns with manure to help keep the moisture in. After lunch I replanted the 4 catmints I dug out yesterday and 2 dianthus (getting short of suitable plants) into the 6 terracotta pots on the back terrace steps. Stopped for a cuppa.
Ramadan has started so there'll be limited gardening for the next month, especially if it's this hot! Did manage to get out this morning though, watered the pots, planted out some lettuce, sowed peas and runner beans in modules. And a few other bits and pieces.
I've been out and planted up some pots, I can move them into the greenhouse if we have a frost forecast. Mended a few leaks on the seeper hose it was flooding in a couple of places. Planted out a few violas. The very, very old montana clematis that had to be cut down when the last of the overpowering conifers were removed has started to sprout again. I'm so chuffed. Wasn't sure it would survive but the trunk which is about 5inches across is sprouting. I only kept the trunk because it was such a lovely knarled shape, glad I did now.
Even better than getting into the garden myself today is the sight of my next door neighbour mowing the front lawn. Lord knows how he is managing it has been ignored since last summer and looked awful, full of weeds that kept seeding in my garden. Think he'll need a long lie down in a cool dark room when he's finished.
This morning I experimented with wrapping all three dalek compost bins with as much bubblewrap/fleece sheets as I could find in the hope that it will keep the heat in the bins and thus 'cook' the compost quicker. Anybody else do this and does it work? I also repotted my snap pea seedlings in their Jiffy pots into larger pots to grow on for a bit before planting them out. Need to keep the shed mice off them!
@Lizzie27 absolutely the more insulation the better, do remember though that hot compost dries quickly so needs watering. I emptied 2 of the pallet compost bins today into a larger double bay to mature, it was alive with tiger worms never seen so many. Hopefully it's the 1st of many batches. Dead headed daffodils there's not many left now, the ox eye daisy's are just opening up among the dafs now and the fox gloves are about 3ft high towering above them. Dead headed the primulas the wife's idea not mine, I think we should divide them now but she's hoping for a late burst of colour. Sowed some little gem, poppies, ox eye daisy, and some mixed aqueligia seeds. My mint and basil seeds have suddenly emerged another 1st having never grown and herbs from seeds
