She is gorgeous @nultyphilip224. I wonder what she was thinking with you following her around all day with a camera. She has been keeping out of the limelight on this thread, but Whisper is famous now.
Like you, I have spent most of the day indoors, too cold and dismal to be out, but Sunday night TV is good, which is why I haven't gone back to Carol. Basically, she chooses two different hellebores, pollinates them, ties a ribbon on the one she has done and then waits for the seeds. Personally, I don't know if it is necessary as the bees tend to do all that anyway. It's pot luck as to what you get though.
I noticed you had a standard Photinia Red Robin. Is it in the ground? I have one in a pot, but because it is tall and thin, it keeps blowing over in the wind. I could give it some neutral/acid soil, and stake it. Will wait to hear what you think.
No Phillip. Thanks I can now talk about it. Love the garden and all the lovely people that help each other. Same here been very wet & windy. No snow thankfully. Even the ferries were off for a while. So I was in the greenhouse working. Had fun and my muscles were happier ha ha xx Same here too time with the cats & dog. Joy xxx
Forgot to mention I bought two Crinodendrons last year and they haven't grown much. They are about 3 foot tall. They do well here in west Scotland and I love them. How long did yours take to get established and get a good growth and any tips on taking cuttings? thanks again xx
What lovely photos of Whisper. She is beautiful with such lovely eyes. How does she get on with Foxy Molly?
Hi Fran,..One very unpredictable cat,..doesn't like to be picked up,..the two neighbours whom she visits have never succeeded but she will allow me,..sometimes she will remain in the house overnight other times she just insists on sleeping at my back door.
Foxy Molly and Whisper get along great,..sniffing at each other nose to nose,..that is scary to me as Whisper has often took a swipe at me lol.

Hi Purplerain,..She pays no heed to the camera lol,..all my cats were posers,..some i know were having a laugh at me when the camera was produced.
Ah yes the reason Carol chooses two Hellebore then takes the pollen from one to the other and just ties a ribbon on the one she pollinated doesn't make sense except to just pollinate which is just what the Bees will do,..however were she to cover the Hellebore she pollinated with Gauze/Mesh then the Bees couldn't alter the pollination with whatever they were carrying so she would just get a cross between the two chosen,..that's how i cross rose bushes,..i hope i have made sense of that lol.
Ah yes i did have a 'Red Robin',..it was in a big container and did well that was some time ago but i gave it away as it took up too much room after a few years,..at present i have a bush very similar in that it changes colour from green to yellow then to red and that is 'Pieris japonica 'Mountain Fire'.
Its blooms.
I have just removed this from the back garden to the front garden.
How well my cats got on in the past,..all eating off a big platter.

Thankfully it stopped raining today though we had a frost last night,..temperature today was 8C=44F,..chilly enough but i still managed to sow some seeds.
My Crinodendron was from a cutting i took when my neighbour died,..luckily i did as the new owner cleared everything out plus the Crinodendron,..the cutting took some time to show signs of growth then suddenly i found myself thinking of pruning,..18 months after i took the cutting it started to grow,..24 months it was a Metre high,..now its 2 Metres high,..i have taken a cutting at the end of last summer,..a cutting from young growth,..prepared a pot with a mix of peat and grit,..dipped the cutting in rooting powder and left it outside over Autumn and up to now,..its slowly growing,..its a nice tree when it produces the Lanteren's also nice dark evergreen leaves.
It suddenly starts growing,..i added some liquid fertiliser 'Miracle Grow',..to give it a treat.
@nultyphilip224 Hi Philip. Whisper sounds very much like my cat. He doesn't like being picked up and if he is hungry he will bite me asking for food! And yet he follows me around and watches what I am doing when he is not asleep. He also has a nifty paw which you have to keep your eye on. Yet he gets on fine with the dog and rubs round him but the dog is very wary knowing about his sharp claws. Won't pass him on the stairs. Love the photo of the eight cats eating together. They look like four sets of twins! Are they all still with you? You must have the patience of a saint with your cuttings etc. I couldn't wait so long for things to happen. Maybe in time...
@moragb1 Well done Morag for getting on with your life, though I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure you will get lots of encouragement on this thread, everyone here is very helpful and friendly. @philipnulty @ Purplerain @Fran IOM I managed to buy the last two Helleborus from the little fruit an veg shop, already planted! I hobbled round Asda, and bought 2 Clematis, one called Volcano, red, and the other a purple called Polish Spirit, only a couple of quid each. The wall will be well decorated this summer! Ahh! Whisper is gorgeous! A big fan of the telly too!!
What a pity there is a lot of rain now,I think the sunny spell cheered us all up!
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@Valley Gardener @nultyphilip224 @Purplerain So pleased you were able to get the last two Hellebores! Obviously nobody recognised the bargain before you got there. And you've planted them out already! Two clematis for a few quid sounds like another bargain. It was a lovely sunny day today but the very strong wind was so cold it wasn't fit to do any gardening. Did go to fill the bird feeders and had a look at my Hellebore which has ten flowers on it. I have two David Austin roses (both were presents) named Grace and Princess Anne. A third I bought as it had been reduced having no label so I have no idea what colour flowers it will produce. Will just have to wait and see. I understand now about Carol and her pollination of the Hellebores. Makes sense. I have four Photinia Red Robins planted in different places at different times. One promises to become a lovely tree, another very young and healthy looking one producing some lovely new red leaves, the third is a bit straggly and the fourth doesn't want to know so I think I shall try moving it. Not much above the ground. I have two hanging baskets of pansies and they were both just green with no flowers but after using Miracle Grow they are now very colourful. It only took about a week. I have used it a lot over the years and it always comes up trumps. Hope you have all been able to get out into the garden. Haven't been able to do anything since last Friday due to the bad weather.
Hi all. Been out most of the day at the local theatre. They have started doing lunch and a play which was very well attended. No point in thinking about the garden as it's so wet and cold so it was nice being tucked up indoors, fed and entertained at the same time.
Glad you got your hellebores @Valley Gardener and I do understand your pollinating explanation @nultyphilip224. She didn't protect them from bees, so it seemed to me to be something to fill her hellebore section on GW. I still love her though 😀.
I have bought quite a few clematis from the supermarket, but I pot them up for a year before I plant them out. They get stronger and more able to cope with the elements. I have four from last year, but the writing has vanished from the labels and now I have no idea what they are! Oops.
Are your Photinias all in the ground @Fran IOM? I think I will move the one in the pot to the ground and hope for the best. They are a lovely tree when they are happy.
