Good morning Philip and everyone @nultyphilip224 glad you were absent for a nice reason, l was afraid you had been struck down by the lurgy as well. Other people's attempts at matchmaking can be far from subtle, l'm glad you took it in good part and had an enjoyable time. Are we talking John Travolta when it comes to the dance moves ? Love your hedgehog photos, Whisper looks singularly unimpressed. Are you feeding them cat food by any chance? Also lovely photos of the hellebore, Foxy Molly (naturally !), and the Robin. You could enter that one in a competition! @Valley Gardener thank you for the comment on the "Anyone done" thread. I really hope you and OH are feeling better today. The sun is shining, although it's chilly, and OH is going back to his mum's to carry on with the work. He has come up with a plan to build a ramp so that she can get out into the back garden. He is a good son ! I have promised him poached eggs on toast with bacon this morning (after l've fed Mr B, naturally), so l had better get on. Enjoy your Sunday everyone
Good morning all. @nultyphilip224 Ah, so you were out on the ran dan being matched up were you lol? I am glad you enjoyed yourself and I take it, still single. Best way to be, do what you like when you like.
I am glad to see the hedgehogs are visiting one by one. @AnniD lovely photo of mouse eating the lot and I hope your hog returns, maybe with a little family, like Philips did.
I read your post in "Done any gardening" and my goodness, you and OH were busy! I had more to plant out, tidied out the shed and made a rusty old bbq into a planter lined with polythene.
@nultyphilip224, it was interesting to see your hostas coming through. Last Autumn, I experimented by dividing some and potting them up. They are all through, but the Spring ones in the ground are not showing yet. I would say on balance that dividing in Autumn works better for me as I can see where to plant them sooner than waiting for the others to emerge.
The other big success I have had it station sowing Nigella. They would never self seed for me, but by sowing in large cell trays and overwintering them, they popped out with no root disturbance and are in the garden looking healthy. The bowles mauve cuttings are on some bottom heat (I am being precious). You seem to take cuttings with such confidence, plonking them up rather than potting them up, with great success.
@Valley Gardener I hope things are improving for you and OH and I wish for continuing good weather for you to be able to get out and catch up.
@Fran IOM have you received anything from SGC yet? I haven't, but (whisper it) I took advantage of the extra personal 20% they sent me. It stops now! It really does lol.
That's all from me, so enjoy your day all. The sun is shining here again and I have my little grandaughter here as a helping hand.
Good Morning all. The sun is trying to make an appearance but the wind is cold. Mind you it was like this yesterday and on the allotment it was quite sheltered so it didn't bother me. It's just the rain that stops play. @AnniD. I think you are being very hard on Mouse. I would suggest that he has filled his cheeks with food, not to satisfy his hunger, but to be able to carry it back to Mr Hog who has decided it's too cold to venture out for himself treating Mouse as his lackey. Read your post on "Has anyone.." and you have certainly been busy. Hope your MIL is satisfied with the amount of bluebells she now has left. I must admit I don't like pulling them up when they are in flower but needs must. @Purplerain. Maybe my plants from the SGC will arrive tomorrow but I haven't yet had an email to say they have been dispatched. Hopefully nobody will be about when they do arrive. Still trying to get my other plants out before they arrive. Planted up lupins and gave them a good spray of Neem oil. One or two aren't quite ready for the ground yet. I think we should delete the SGC thread so that we aren't tempted by all the codes. Enjoy your Granddaughter's helping hand. @nultyphilip224. It would do you good to have a night out and you don't mind being awake in the early hours. You've got Foxy Molly and Whisper to keep you company and I bet they were glad when you returned. I think you are right about the Virginia Creeper. The Victorians either liked it or didn't do much in the way of gardening. I don't have much stored on my laptop like the photos that everyone else has! I usually rely on my SIL to rectify anything that goes wrong. Good to see your Cornus looking well. Mine isn't quite as far ahead as yours and the stems aren't red. It has been having outings outside but will be some time before it goes out permanently. When will yours stay outside? My Hostas (only two) are showing as well but I did notice a couple of holes in one of the leaves so out came the Neem spray. So far I have only found one slug and one snail. Foxy Molly is checking everything out while Whisper wants to know what strange creatures you are feeding. @ValleyGardener Do hope you and OH are feeling better today.
The sun is well out now so the sooner I get all other jobs and shopping out of the way the sooner I can do what I like best. (Not buying more plants @Purplerain)
hi gutties,..i expect most of the cuttings to bloom this season,..a few are very small and may not,..the plants i have which were self seeded last season by the parent plants are just a tad bigger than some of those removed from the spires so one could expect blooms from both,..its a sure way to increase Delphinium stock and less troublesome than sowing Delphinium seeds before the last frost.
@AnniD,..thankfully nothing catching in that line so far,..odd thing is that nobody around here has Flu which is unusual around this time.
I am always told at these dinners that a friend of one of the three or four couples present invited a friend,..luckily its always a woman lol,..its a weird set up though i always enjoy the event,..i tend to keep to myself most of the time then mix now and then with people,..where as most people do the reverse.
Lol at the John Travolta query,..i tend to go for the slow ones,..close encounters .
Oh yes that's Cat Food i leave out for the Hedgehogs,..small dried food,..rather than the larger Doggy stuff,..i do leave it out well after ''Whisper'' and ''Foxy Molly'' are fed otherwise they will eat it,..both of them eat each others food.
That Robin,..is very friendly,..many gardens have a Robin take up residence in gardens and will hunt away any other Robin from infringing on their claimed territory,..i have only seen two Robins together in my garden once where they were on friendly terms,..around Spring of course.
@Purplerain,..still single lol,..when i go abroad on holiday its an advantage in that i can go where i know i will enjoy myself,..like the caves in Spain,..boat trips around islands,..visiting National Gardens in each Country,..its surprising how many people would not like that,..one of my favourite haunts are where there are Flamenco Dancing,..looking at it,..not dancing it lol,..top of my list is ''Maria Pages'',..seen below in ''Firedance',..its a slow start but really builds up. https://youtu.be/BdDD9JX-Tyg
Well done diving your Hostas,..that's something i swore i would do last summer,..alas still thinking i should have done so,..i will collect the seeds this season and see can i produce a cross breed.
You are right i do tend to just take a cutting and plonk it into a pot and it grows,..i seldom think any more about it other than watch its growing progress,..its become more of a habit now than a project.
@Fran IOM,..horrible weather here this past two days,..VERY strong gusts of wind for 48 hours,..greenhouse rattling,.. flower pots that were empty flying here and there,..holding my breath as the tall Cape Fuchsia bent over to breaking point then heading out to hold it up with two canes across it and one holding them,..thankfully it worked,..my Lupins and Delphiniums got a thrashing though flattened but not broken they should recover.
It was indeed good to have the night out,..i didn't mind the late hours at all but the dancing can do a person in,..i do lots of walking and am always on the go but dancing can be as painful as when one overdoes gardening for the first time lol,..my dance partner last night is supposed to be a great cook,..i am beginning to think my friends have finally pinned down what i like
You are lucky to have your SIL to rectify anything that goes wrong with your Laptop,..its amazing what junk one just picks up as we surf the net.
Oh my Cornus 'Midwinter Fire' is outside since i was sent the cutting its doing very well,..impressive colours on the stems.
So your Hostas are coming along well apart from the one Slug and Snail,..i must admit i sprayed mine last year pretty often as Snails and Slugs really go for Hosta foliage,..it worked and many people remarked how the leaves were free of holes.
Good morning everyone So you are more of a Fred Astaire than a John Travolta @nultyphilip224 ! Those hostas look very healthy. Mine weren't too bad last year, l put it down to the hot weather we had, when all the slugs and snails seemed to disappear in the heat. Very quiet on here yesterday, everyone busy in the garden l assume (except @Valley Gardener & OH who l hope are making a good recovery). @Purplerain , good work with old barbeque, it's very satisfying when you can turn it into something useful rather than throw it away . @Fran IOM, nice try in the defence of Mouse. "I know, l'll carry this food back to Hedgehog. Oops, l seem to have accidentally swallowed it. I will try again. Oops...." The forecast for next weekend is for much warmer weather 20-22 degrees . If Hedgehog doesn't show up then, l shall really start thinking the worst. Even Casanova had to eat sometimes...... Anyway, another day beckons and Mr B wants feeding, so l had better get on with it. Hope you all have a good one.
Good Morning All. Still a very strong wind but the sun has made an appearance so maybe not too bad. It was cold yesterday but still managed to do some weeding in the sheltered spots. @AnniD. I feel someone has to defend Mouse. He may have swallowed a small amount but only to test the taste for his boss. Did he appear last night? It does seem strange that he hasn't appeared of late. I hope the forecast for 20-22 degrees is true as we could do with some warmer gardening weather. Yesterday I bought (not plants) a small stone cat asleep and looking very worried. He is rather heavy considering his size. He is now on the step to the shed on guard. Also bought a really nice large pot and have yet to decide what to plant in it. Both from TKMax. Don't often go in there but they do have some nice pots. Made sure mine had a drainage hole. There was also another cat I would have like but there was no price on him and if you take it to the counter they say they can't sell it. Maybe next time.. @nultyphilip224. You certainly have had some bad weather. Good job you managed to save your fuchsia. After the last storm we had I may have mentioned that my whole fuchsia hedge was lying prostrate on the ground covering some of my plants. It took me a long time to get each individual plant upright tied with electrical flex. They are well over six foot. The wire that originally held them upright had snapped. They may not have looked good but once they are in flower the flex won't show. At least my lupins aren't at the stage where they could be damaged yet. Your Hostas looked really good last year. I was concerned the other day as my anemones looked as though they had died overnight but fortunately after a good soaking they came back to life. You don't really think of getting the hose out at this time of year. When is the best time to split primroses? @Valley Gardener. Do hope you and yours are feeling better and it won't be too long before you are able to get out into the garden.
Hard to believe it's the start to another week. Have a good day one and all.
