I am so sorry the post seemed so judgemental but the comment from Fran was just so off the cuff had the pets put to sleep no explanation as an animal lover and lover of all things living dogs, plants, other animals and humans in that order! I was very upset to read such an off the cuff comment with no sadness expressed. I had now idea it was so long ago i was born in the 60's 1961 to be precise so i can imagine the pet tranport companies were not even on the scene in those days. I apologise Fran for being so judgemental and i imagine it was a very hard decision to make in Singapore in the sixties. I would not want any of mine to suffer in any way and if having them put to sleep was the kindness thing to do i would not hesitate. xxx
Hi Nanny Treacle. It is very kind of you to apologise and as you did not know the facts I can understand how you felt when you read my post. There were so many other circumstances as well. The pets would have had to go into six months quarantine if we could have afforded to send them to the UK and being in the Services we could have been sent abroad again during that time. I don't think they would even have survived the six months. We still have photos of them to remember them by. You could go to the market and they would be selling kittens or puppies for a few dollars which should still have been with the mother. Anyway enough for now and welcome to the forum. I hope this hasn't put you off. I fully accept your apology and appreciate your reply. (Don't know where I got the "dawnad" from!) Hi Purplerain. Thank you for your post. Much appreciated.
Hi Folks,..sorry to read that weather is not the best for gardening in some areas,..as for here it was 14C=58F,..that was in my garden mind you,..i presume it would be a tad cooler outside,..i spent a lot of time today collecting all the Foxgloves and Verbascum from all areas of the garden on paths and in pots,..collected 30 of them,..hard to believe there were so many,..finding spots where i could plant them in groups was very hard.
Oh 'Whisper' the Cat is Female,..i gave her that name as she didn't utter a sound until she was well into her mature age,..she will only come indoors for breakfast and the evening meal or if the weather is really bad or if she is ill.
@Valley Gardener,..wow that Hellebore was a bargain,..do you think the price was a mistake,..either way keep an eye out for further bargains from that shop
'Woo',..looks very fierce at the camera,..an interesting looking cat and i found the info on the 'Maine Coon Cat' new to me and also very interesting.
@Purplerain ,..i should be getting something started re my eye tomorrow touch wood,..oh going around with my head at an angle makes me feel weird lol,..i probably look weird as well lol but it helps me get about.
@Fran IOM ,..so i am not the only one ringing one phone to find another lol,..the worst was when i searched the house in every nook and cranny,..couldn't find the phone,..asked my 87year old neighbour to phone my phone,..lo and behold there was my phone in a hanging basket where i left it the day before,..luckily the battery was well charged otherwise i would never have found it
On the subject of putting animals to sleep but not for medical reasons,..i had to do the same,.. so when i read your post i just thought,.. sad to have to do that and presumed straight away there were circumstances warranting that and gave it no more thought. Oh,..@dawnad came up on my email as having posted,..looks like the post was removed.
Where i live its a farming community and lots of manure on offer to take away so i never had to use bone meal or fish meal,..a bag of good Cow Manure does me for ages once i spread it around,..otherwise i use a liquid fertiliser,..as for Hellebores,..a good Leaf Compost will suffice.
You will have to excuse my shadow in the image below,..my excuse is with one eye heading in a different direction i neglected to see my own shadow lol.
Morning Philip, lovely photos. I have bought another 2 double hellebores (bargains, had to have them !). Potted them up and they are by the back door. Even my husband commented on how pretty they are. Hope things are going okay, had to laugh at the mobile phone in the hanging basket !
Morning all, and happy St Davids day to @Valley Gardener. I also had to laugh at the phone in the hanging basket. My problem is leaving it in bags and then finding unreplied to messages. Like @Fran IOM I don't bother with it much, but they are handy I admit.
The weather here is dull, but not cold and suddenly, here we are in March. I have used up my propagator trays, mainly forcing on Dahlias to take cuttings, but they have been slow this year so a rethink needed to make a start on the annuals.
On the subject of Hellebores, I saw on another thread that tying a greaseproof paper bag round the seedhead helps to collect the seeds, so that sounds like a good tip for growing more. They are stunning at this time of year.
Lovely photos as always @nultyphilip224, and I hope this eye problem is on its way to being repaired.
Good Morning all. Weather rather dull at the moment but at least it's dry and forecast for a brighter afternoon. Managed an hour at the allotment yesterday before the rain came down. @nultyphilip224 If it's today I hope you get some positive results with your eye problem. The only way you could possibly have found your phone would have been someone calling you when you were standing close to the hanging basket. The chances of that happening would have been very remote. So glad you also saw @dawnad as I thought I was losing the plot when it had disappeared! Maybe Nanny Treacle changed her name between posts. @Valley Gardener. Had an email from T&M this morning and decided to have a look as it is free postage for the weekend. I searched for Hellebores and you wouldn't believe the prices! Wouldn't even consider it apart from some at £4.99. Others over £20. You can relish your little bargain. Did it have a name? @Purplerain. I read that thread about tying greaseproof bags on the seedhead of the hellebores which sounds a good idea so can think about that. At the moment I wouldn't need many bags! At what time would that be necessary?
Thank you @Fran IOM !😊 I'm posting a pic before planting her,as I find it difficult to get down for close pics! She is "Winterhart" I'm sure very common! But I'm so thrilled to at least make a small start on Hellebores......I wish I'd bought the other two that were there, but it was raining, and I'm not much help at carrying with a crutch!!!😕
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@AnniD ,..good morning to you AnniD,..you ladies certainly are in the luck finding bargains and pretty ones as well,..i visited a new garden centre to get Seed Compost it was really good stuff two 75 Litre bags for £10,..i was happy with that but had a look around at prices Hellebore were £8,..small Hydrangea £16,..the latter i can not even give away i have about three which are well rooted and about 45 Cm high no takers around my area.
@Purplerain ,..miserable day here today as its raining since early morning,..temperatures dropped from yesterday 14C=58F to today 12C=52F,..plus i am stuck in the house,..idle hands lol.
Up to now i hadn't given thought to collecting Hellebore Seeds but as there is so much interest in the plant of late i thought to save seeds,..the grease proof bag is a good idea,..as i have never collected those seeds i am informed the Hellebore Seeds must be sown immediately as they go off quickly,..someone told me this about about two weeks ago.
@Fran IOM ,..lol you were not the only one thought they were losing the plot about @dawnad,..it was in my email as a post made but i couldn't find it in the Thread.
Today was supposed to be the start of the eye problem solution but it had to be put off until next week,..i decided to join a firm in Jan of this year but before 24 hours were up i cancelled,..however they had started the paperwork in motion resulting a Direct Debit to begin this week,..my Bank could not stop the Direct Debit,..but agreed to block my card and issue me with a new one,..problem solved,..alas with no card today the Optician visit couldn't be made,..one door opens another closes lol
@Valley Gardener ,..'Happy St Davids Day to you and everyone else',..a Peaceful Card below for you all....You can view your card here,.....Oops i didn't mean the St Patricks Greeting to pop up,..senior moment lol.
Very cute picture of the Cat and the Daffodil,..and the greeting ,..Hellebore 'Winterhart' is a beauty and i can see how you are so pleased about it,..well spent money seeing it was a bargain as well.
