Very sensible to stop driving under the circumstances Philip. Hope things get sorted out soon.

Hi Philip and all. The weather still hasn't been conducive to gardening so my Hellebore is still awaiting its place in the allotment. Hopefully tomorrow will be milder. We just don't seem to have had the spring like weather that some have been experiencing. When it comes to the seeds stage I shall be back for advice as I haven't a clue.
So sorry to hear of your eye problems. Do hope the specialist has good news and hope it won't spoil your enjoyment of the forum.
If you can only manage 5 hours sleep it is better to wake at 7am rather than 5am but seems like something you are very used to. At least Foxy Molly has your company for a much longer day.
I am sure you will miss your fuchsia and so will the bees. If you google "Manx Fuchsia" you will see the type I have and the story behind it. It grows in the country and very resilient and needs no looking after. Mine were taken from wild cuttings a couple of years or so ago and now like trees.
You have a lot of house plants to look after as well and Foxy Molly seems to think you have done a good job.
    Good luck for tomorrow.  :)

Thanks AnniD,..luckily the Specialist is only approx 15 mins walk away,..i went to see him years ago as i had a Sty,..other than that never any bother with my eyes,..old age i guess  B)

  • @Fran IOM,..thanks Fran i will need luck this time as its not like a dislocated shoulder which gets put back,..this problem suddenly got worse,..no pain or discomfort,..just double vision and as for looking at a line yikes its up high on the right and down low on the left,..wearing an eye patch eliminates all that.

Seeds ah yes,..most you will find are sown just below the soil surface,..keep soil moist,..sow most seeds after the last frost if planting outdoors,..otherwise once Spring arrives seeds will start off for you quickly enough be they in a greenhouse,..cloche,..or in a window,..i say most seeds because some like to be sown before the last frost for better performance,..its a going through the seasons thing,..'stratification',..just like Delphiniums for example.

We are having mild weather for the past two weeks with some rain,..tonight its blowing a strong wind as i can hear my greenhouse windows rattling.

Oh i looked up your 'Manx Fuchsia',..very similar to mine which was 'Fuchsia magellancia',..as below,..i took a cutting from the parent plant on an Island in Lough Ree about 15 years ago,..i will miss it but can use the space it left for better use.

Hi Philip. This eye problem must be very worrying for you. I hope the specialist can find out what is wrong. Are you able to manage without the car where you are? It's strange how these things can suddenly happen out of the blue.

Lovely photos as always. I have a low growing compact fuchsia that disappears in Winter. I took two cuttings last year and they have taken, although being under glass, they have not died down. I like them because the leaves are a vivid lime green colour and I will use them as contrast in the border. I have no idea what they are called.

  • @PhilipNulty  Hi everyone in Cottage garden! I'm so sorry to hear of your eye problem Philip, they are so precious. I've just had two cataract ops done, very close together,as I inherited Glaucoma from my Dad,it's just not my year!! I was driving to the pool with one eye closed, awful double vision! Had to give up as I was a danger on the roads! Now after three lots of lenses that were no good because of prisms,i finally got ones that are more or less ok. Distance good.......close not so good!  I hope you are sorted soon.

I bought a Eucalyptus Gunnii today,so when it's all planted I will post pics of it,plus Rustic rail, and rescued rose,I have moved her,and she's sprouting more new growth,so all is well. I have to pace myself, with all the disability probs, but a little now and then I can manage.
Your pics are lovely,I envy the Coloured Hellebores, but have got some birthday money to spend.😊😊

@nultyphilip224 Hope you had something positive to go on after your visit to the specialist.
Actually had a good day yesterday for gardening so was able to plant out my hellebore.
Took me a while to find a space so hopefully it is in the right conditions. Rained today so haven't been able to have a look. Will keep in mind the information about the seeds.
Maybe you could take a cutting from your fuchsia and have it in a pot for old times sake.
Do you use a camera or your phone for all the lovely photos?

@Purplerain  I like the sound of the colour of your fuchsia. There must be so many variations. I had one in a pot for some years which was a lovely brown colour so when I acquired the allotment I planted it out and it grew like wildfire. Funnily enough half of it turned green and the other half remained brown. Looked as though it had been done on purpose. It will be interesting to see what it's like this summer.

@Valley Gardener  Sorry to hear about your eye problems but sounds as though you are happier with the current results. Must be very frightening when things go wrong with your sight. Make sure you pace yourself. Will look forward to seeing your photos and maybe you have a new hellebore which you bought with your birthday money?

Lol at 'Pirate',..you beat me to it as i did think 'Pirate' when i first put on the patch and thought to write that i was elected for the 'Pirates of Penzance',..i didn't know how to spell that location,..still not sure lol.

Without the car i am lost as for the past 15 years living in my present house i have never ordered fuel or had deliveries,..i tend to collect everything needed by car,..suddenly it hit me after visiting the Optician,..i am stranded.

Your Fuchsia sounds like a beauty with the lime green foliage,..it might be Fuchsia 'genii' as its one with lime green foliage ?.

Things are looking up,..eye wise,..the Specialist said my sight is fine and he is sure its the muscle or muscles in the left eye,..so he wants me to see another Specialist for corrective lens,..plus a Syringe and Probe,..i don't like the sound of the latter and you can bet i will opt out of someone poking around in my eye,..a fly is bad enough lol.

Sorry to see you had two cataract ops done,..i always presumed its a sore operation,..however if the results improve the sight its worth it,..i don't know which is best having good long distance sight and not so good up close or the reverse,..driving wise the long distance might be better,..yep its not being your year,..fingers crossed things might get better.

Well chosen with your Eucalyptus gunnii,..i have always admired the foliage,..a nice shaped leaf with that silvery blue coloration ,..looking forward to seeing images of it planted also your rescued rose and rustic rail.

You are great managing your gardening with all the probs,..despite having to pace yourself with a little now and then you are getting there,..keep it up its a joy to plan and see things grow for you.

After the visit to the Specialist i felt like a drunk walking home,..he puts drops in each eye then gets me to wait outside until the drops kick in,..everything goes blurred and remains like that for ages after,..i found myself stepping high when it looked like a footpath was there,..none,..it was the blur and my imagination lol.

Delighted your weather was good enough to let you plant your Hellebore,..just keep an eye on it until you know its established,..they are a hardy enough plant to withstand sun and drought but thrive in semi shade,..i lived on a Victorian Estate for some years and of the three wooded areas they had there were thousands of Wild Hellebore,..all just lime green blooms,..i hated walking on them as they were dense and hard to avoid.

Great minds think alike lol,..i did take a cutting of the Fuchsia and it will be on my mind when i look at it growing that i killed off the parent,..what can one do it took up so much space.

Oh most of the pictures i post were taken with my camera,..its pocket size,..Canon SX610HS,..other times its the phone as i always have that with me,..both Camera and Phone Camera take good pictures,..making a video with the phone is best as it doesn't keep adjusting as things move making a slight blur for a second or more.

Walking across the town bridge after my Specialist visit i had to take a shot of the Cherry Tree below.
