It's always tempting to prune cherries when the leaves are gone and you can see what you are doing but unfortunately it leaves the trees open to silver leaf disease which can kill them (we lost 3 of ours this way before we knew better). So perhaps it might be safer to hang fire on further pruning until the summer.

  • I have divided my astrantias, pulmonarias, verbena bodnariensis, and geraniums, from 8 plants to 32 plants, moved the box cone and the osmanthus and planted an extra bag of daffs + 50 tulips I missed......
  • I just potted up some more Tulips, & finally put some winter Violas into a couple of containers. I had already done some of both the previous but had more to do. Did a bit of tidying of some dead leaves etc. Not much but was good to get my hnds in the soil again after nearly 3 days of inactivity.

Allotment Boy , known what you mean about getting hands into soil , it will be 2019 before I get to plot , hope the weather holds !
  • Love winter sunshine  on allotment  yesterday. Clay soil a bit heavy so did limited digging. Opted to weed, lime and manure the asparagus  and prune and mulched the autumn  fruiting  raspberries.  A few parsnips and leeks as bonus

Did a bit more titivating and tidying,  accidentally made a ladybird homeless. Felt so guilty, but l found him (?)  a new home in a sedum head. Found some more hellebore leaves, but no sign of new shoots so left them for now. There are a whole load of self seeded grasses but they are right at the back of the bed and a real pain to get at, so l have left them for another day
Watered the pots of bulbs in the greenhouse and have come in for a cuppa. Think that might be it for today, l don't want to overdo it. Wish l was young again, when l could garden all day long !
  • Oh @AnniD I know just what you mean! I was out there for about 3/4 hour yesterday, did a bit of crocosmia tidying, planted a few more bulbs, sat down on a big rock in the watery sunshine, surveying the scene, mentally planning the summer planting, then when I stood up,realised I could do no more!! I hate getting old!!

I know, l used to go out about 9am, cup of tea at 10.30 and listen to Popmaster, out again, in for a sandwich about 1pm. Out again at 2, another tea break at 4, and then out again until 5pm. I don't have a big garden, but you know how there's always something to do and the time just flies ! These days l walk round, make a list so l don't get side tracked (that doesn't always work !) and try and do as much as possible, sensibly ! I was feeling a bit fed up the other day and wondering if l could be bothered to sow seeds etc this year, then flicking through a gardening magazine l could feel my enthusiasm returning, thank goodness.  :)
  • I used to do similar to your routine AnniD, out for most of the day apart from an hour or so for lunch, there is always plenty to do here in our garden, but now I am winding down out of ill health not through choice.  There will be worse weather to come I feel sure before we can get outside for a full day, however as you mentioned the seed catalogues are now arriving and the thrill of growing new plants from seed always spurs me on to get going again towards the end of the winter months.  In the meantime we have a few more projects to finish - like preparing for a new patch of grass, finishing off a wild flower meadow, cleaning inside our greenhouse before seed sowing in earnest and some late pruning.
  • AnniD GD I know exactly what your saying you tend to wind down at this time of year start to think should I bother then something catches your eye or you do just a little in the garden and your suddenly reinvigorated and before you know it you planting seeds moving things around and springs here again.

I was getting that way for me then yesterday my first lot of new seed arrived and its all change, unfortunately no garden for me today as the old pump playing up a bit, so just rest today but tomorrow I hope I should be at it again.
