Dug over old strawberry bed at allotment on the sixth but got so much bind weed out of it , have dug it again today only half a bucket this time , so covered it with horse manure for the winter . Also did some repairs to fencing
Filled bird feeder at allotment and home just had lunch time for a rest

Both allotment and garden ready for winter ❄️

Ran out of space to store yet more bin bags of leaves (our leaf bin is full to the brim), so decided to cut back a bit of hedge between a wall and the leaf bin. This cleared enough space to store another 6 bags full. I might think about either making the leaf bin bigger or perhaps making two, side by side. Pruned a branch off the pear tree as it was at face level, rather an accident waiting to happen. Tied bubblewrap more securely around the box ball pot as it had blown off in the wind last night. Opened up coldframes & greenhouse for a bit, then closed them as frost is predicted I believe.

  • I only did  just over an Hour at the Allotment yesterday as I am suffering with cold/cough etc. Harvested more cauliflower, beetroot, & went through a sack of Charlotte spuds to knock off any sprouts & discard any other damaged ones. Brought 1/2 home left the rest as the lottie shed is colder than here at home.  A quick peek at the late main crop ones as well showed they are all ok so it looks as though they will last well into new year. Too wet underfoot to dig or do  anything else.

  • My Dad used to have a good store of potatoes for us during the winter months, sadly we don't have any due to an infestation of blight a couple of years ago, which we cannot shake off.
Today we raked over the top soil, removing small stones and levelling the soil. I divided two clumps of chives to make 4 potted plants, OH shredded bundles of willow twigs that had blown down in the gales and I cleared the pond stream of fallen leaves. Later we discussed a proposed new fence with the gardener who may be erecting it in the new year.
  • We tend to get a lot of blight on our Allotment site which is why I always grow Early 2nd early & some main crop just to hedge my bets. With the hot dry weather this summer we did not suffer any blight at all  in the main season. Some people had a tiny bit on outdoor tomatoes but only those that kept them going well into November.

  • Managed a good morning on the Allotment today. Finally got round to pruning the cane fruit in my fruit cage. Working with the sun on my back was very pleasant.

So much on at moment don’t think I will get anything done at allotment or garden until the New Year
Allottment is pruning & what I call maintance and garden is cutting trees on stream bank , both should keep me busy during the winter

  • Just had to give the lawn a final cut. Macerated might be the best description...

Not proper gardening but I had some bulbs delivered, daffs, camassia and tulips. I was expecting them so nipped out early to get some compost at B&Q before the day trippers arrived.

They had horse poo back in so I thought I'd better get some as I haven't mulched/padded out the soil everywhere I want to yet. They had the wrong sign up again so they kindly sold me the poo at the incorrect discount  o:) Also bought some half price seeds, tall sweet peas, cowslips and beetroots.

Did some bird food and bath admin but didn't plant up bulbs, was expecting a flurry but it was just bitterly cold. A blustery blizzard happening now though.

Still haven't received my last rose delivery, not sure whether to nag or not, they might be busy. 🤔 Anyone else waiting for a delivery from Beales/Classic? 🌹

Short answer is no. I love how the dead garden looks, I respect how they are protecting themselves and growing bigger underground. I will do my best to add to garden from Feb onwards. Can't wait.
