  • Put my Dahlia's to bed for the winter,  in pots of  compost in the greenhouse. Looking at the Beech trees only about one more leaf clearing session to go this year -hooray for that.
  • Worked in front garden a bit yesterday, while waiting for a package which never came. Today at plots lifted Dahlias, put them in a crate in greenhouse to dry off a bit before I will put them into final store. Lifted a crown of Rhubarb to divide & give some to a fellow plot holder.

I waited until after lunch till it warmed up a bit, then weeded the lawn side of the front main border - isn't amazing that weeds keep growing when other plants are dying down? Pruned my Eglatyne rose (which still had buds on) to avoid wind rock as it's in a sometimes very windy position. Couldn't face doing any more leaf collecting, the ground's completely covered again overnight.

Not really but I finally got round to drilling holes in some buckets I have fruit trees in. We were planning to move so I put them into 15Ltr buckets instead of the ground, I was hoping they could have a new home sometime this winter but it seems that won't happen so I got the drill out and ruined all the buckets, they cost a whole 60p each! Much cheaper than buying large plant pots.
  • What a great idea Skandi - and easier to move when you need to.  We walked around the field, looked at the apples trees to further their pruning during the week and looked at and accepted that we do have another leak/over flow in the pond as the water level is still decreasing daily.

G D is it worth letting the pond find its own level , just to see if you can see the problem , just a thought
  • My husband continued to prune one of the old apple trees whilst I potted up more seedlings - in our conservatory which was out of the wind - 10 degrees in there and sunny this morning.

I collected all (well, a lot) of the windfall apples and leaves from the lawn spread under the apple trees and some larger shrubs. I find they mulch down over Winter plus give the wildlife something to eat or hide in too. When I came back I doors, the birds had a good forage. A great spotted Woodpecker flew in for a peck on one of the apple trees too.

More leaf collecting. OH used the mower on front lawn and then the blower/shredder machine on the flower beds/paths. Ran out of space so resorting now to black plastic binbags.  I also tidied up the rose/catmint/iris border which was looking quite straggly.
My strawberries on a high raised bed still have healthy leaves - should I now be cutting
all these off? Retired inside when it got really cold at 3.30 pm for a cup of tea and a read of this week's Garden News magazine. It's good value with a free packet of seeds at £1 per week (on subscription) and keeps me quiet for an hour or so!
