I mulched the Asparagus bed (it's in a builders crate) with manure then wrapped the crate with fleece and old bamboo blinds to hide the white fleece. I didn't get round to doing this last year and the asparagus was very late in sprouting, so I'm hoping if I keep the roots warmer, it might help. Then I lugged the 3 lily pots closer to the wall for protection and covered the tops with glass to keep the rain out.

  • Lifted my Dahlia's today and cleaned them off . Also got another cut of the lawn done , and continued raking up leaves , should end up with a decent amount leaf mould next year .

No gardening today as it has rained all day, unless you count the 3 min dash out of the front door to check on my partially filled pothole - now full of water of course!

Is it gardening to have a bonfire, getting rid of my old fence and accumulated branches?

Also set off a load of fireworks :)

Been sorting out my pots and baskets as some have been devastated by vine weevil, forgot to treat at the right time.
Lost one of my favourite Heucheras (Peach Flambe),nothing left to propagate from  :'(
was a bit luckier with H. Maroon Blush, managed 4 cuttings.
All my 3 hanging baskets have been planted up with Sedum confusum for next year.
Trying to save money as cash is tight so using plants that I already have!
S.confusum looks good all year round and they should eventually trail over the sides.

    Hopefully a bit like this!

Hi @madpenguin. What sort of damage does the vine weevil cause? I have noticed that a couple of my heucheras have holes in the leaves and know that slugs and snails don't usually bother with them. Still have my Peach Flambe which is my favourite mainly for the colour making it stand out.

Hi @Diana 1. Thanks for your response. Fortunately it doesn't seem like it could be the vine weevil. (Plants are still growing well apart from the holes). Do hope you manage to get rid of them as it must be very disheartening.
  • I am afraid once vine weevil is in your garden it is very hard to eliminate. The best treatment for open ground and pots is the biological control nematode, but this will only control not eliminate. You will probably have to re-treat every year. (I do).
