Proper cold wind here (Glos), but went out to put some bits of old trellis on top of the tulip pots, weighted down on the edges with bricks. This worked last year, and as  l spotted Mr Squirrel going down the road this morning, realised l hadn't done it! Pigeons have joined the blackbird in helping themselves to OH's grapes, fruit all over the lawn.

Took a Rose from a pot and re-planted it into a border. Collected fallen leaves for leaf mould (on going process) , took last of the tomatoes off the plants and put them in the compost pile. Dug up and potted 2 Hibiscus seedlings  and picked a lovely bunch of Dahlia's. Not a bad mornings work in cold but sunny conditions , love the autumn.

It warmed up by 11.30 am and the sun came out so planted an ivy in the garage wall planter (just for something green over the winter). Gathered all the ceramic bits and pieces up and stowed them in the shed. OH took all the runner beans down and dismantled the supports. Then we shifted the agapanthus & hosta pots to the wall in the courtyard where it's a bit more sheltered. I usually put some kind of cover over them to keep them dry, but it fell to bits when OH hoiked it out, so will have to devise something else. There's lots still in flower - I must walk round the garden and make a list.

Had our first frost this morning so waited until it got warmer! Just brushed down the drive and pruned a rose and hebe that were obscuring some lovely deep plum hellebores behind (apparently hellebores like some sunshine). Remembered that I hadn't bubble wrapped the two outside taps so hastily wrapped them both as it feels like it's going to be cold again tonight. Retired for tea and cake.

  • Went to buy some bark chip mulch today for a newly planted acer.  GC had a load of 50% off deals on foxgloves, pulmonaria and primula.  £40 later and I have 7 new plants  :*

    They saw me coming.

No gardening but I have bought a second 200 litre Wickes water butt and stand and spent quite a while replacing and rerouting the gutter and down pipe from our conservatory. I managed to snap two of the fastening tabs for the elbows so had to return these for exchange. A smear of soft soap this time and they snapped shut. We had five 200 litre water butts in our last garden but two should be fine in our much smaller garden.

Too cold today for me to do gardening, so went to the GC for coffee, cake and a rose.

Enjoyed the coffee and cake but unfortunately they didn't have the rose I wanted so have just ordered a bareroot one on line.

Couple of hours at allotment this afternoon
Now we altered the clocks doesn’t get dark early
  • I managed a session of digging on the Allotment today soil is moist but still quite hard in places. There was quite a bite to the wind though needed to keep moving to stay warm.
