Been to G/C today bought some bags of compost to finish potting up spring bulbs and primroses for 2 pots at front of house
Onions  , Shallots and garlic for allotment
hopefully get some jobs done tomorrow if it has stopped raining ☔️
    Happy Gardening
  • OH removed bucket fulls of pine needles from the house gutters and then we spent 2 hours removing the bay tree from it's huge pot - the pot was waterlogged - the drain hole was bunged up - hence the rain and irrigation water had built up in the pot - we are annoyed because we had only potted this bay tree up in the new terracotta pot earlier this year. Sorry I only have two pictures - one of the bay tree and one of a similar terracotta pot that we had to empty today.
  • Finally got to Allotments, rain has done a lot of good. Picked salad rocket and some more Toms, and 1 last outdoor cucumber all rapidly coming to an end now. Spent the rest of the time cutting back blarckberry & old raspberry canes, strted to clear under the fruit trees. More to do when th erest of the leaves come off which wont be long.

Cut back some of Golden Gate rose today. Some lengths previously tied in had somehow got blunt ends, don't know what happened there. Cut them out and will tie in the other new canes at some point.

Scraped and swept the brick path, had become a bit muddy and weedy, also sorted the nasty mess under the bird feeders.

Dug out a rambling rose that I've been cutting down bit by bit as it ripped the trellis off in a storm. Was going to keep it and invest in an industrial trellis, but I've since found a decent, smaller rose to replace it with and can just put another wood trellis up at 10x less cost. Had to cut down my clem alpina too, hope that comes back, it's a lovely plant.

Guernsey Donkey, I use old 'J' cloths over the drain holes in my pots, then covered with about 1" of H.Grit  as I find it does a better job of draining water, keeps the woodlice and ants out as well.  They do degenerate over time so are replaced when plants are repotted.

  • Thanks for the useful tip Lizzie - certainly a new one on me.  Luckily my OH was able to drill two more holes in the base of the terracotta pot - and I covered them with a terracotta ridge tile shaped like a wave - I don't plan on re potting the Bay tree for a few years now but your idea is a good one for the future.

Ants - I have lined some pots with fleece which seems to have worked in keeping ants out
