@Victoria Sponge you ask about my tulips etc sorry I have just read back and found your question.
All the tulips are for the new rose beds as are the geraniums, the tulips I'm going to plant deep 12" as I have been advised by Sarah Raven by doing this they can be left in the ground all year and continue to give a good display for years.
The geraniums are to give ground cover below the roses during the summer, all the roses are highly scented in deep reds, burgundy and burn orange due in November  :/

The daffodils are for the sun terrace bed along with yellow crocus, hyacinths, and tulips.

@Lizzie27, thanks for that (just caught up), l will wait until November. I just wasn't sure if it applied to pots. Still have plenty of other things to be getting on with, but tomorrow looks like a washout (l hope), so Sunday is pencilled in for the next gardening day. Hope everyone has a good gardening weekend :)
  • Cleared an area under a tree of grass and weeds.  Purchased some pulmonaria and sweet woodruff.  Wood anenomes on their way in the post.  Can't resist some planting even in October!  It's been such a beautiful day.

AnniD, just watched GW and Monty was planting his tulips in pots and said it didn't matter about tulip fire as that is a disease in the ground. Not entirely certain he is right what do others think? It would certainly be warmer to plant them in October!

    Lizzie , I agree
Could not put tulip bulbs 12 inches deep in some pots and they come up ok as long as I chicken wire the tops to stop squirrels 🐿
  • Seems to be a misunderstanding I was talking about putting them into a rose boarder not pots VS ask what I was going to do with the 400 tulips that had just arrived  :)

  • That sounds very exciting @Hampshire_Hog - you must have a decent sized area to plant up? I think those colours will look lovely, very bold.

I'm also using G phaeum as underplanting for a couple of roses. I have the geraniums but haven't made a final decision on the roses.

  • @Victoria Sponge it's only two boarders 5mt x 2mt the bulbs will go in about 150mm apart along the front behind a small box hedge. Its amazing how many you need and they all have to be planted alternately in all directions I do have a plan on paper somewhere  :/

  • It doesn't look like we will be able to get out to cut down the Weeping Willow again today. The rain is beating down.  Probably just as well, as my movement is still very much restricted with rib pain.

GWRS, I very occasionally water the bulbs in pots over the winter, probably once a month or so, a bit more when they start showing through. I reckon it keeps the bulbs drier over the winter so they don't rot in winter rains.  None of my books give much information on what to do under cover which is annoying.  Has anybody else got more experience?
