  • @Lizzie27 re; the painted over bolts: try to scrape the paint away from the threads and give them a good squirt of WD 40 leave for a while (overnight if possible) then you might be able to shift them.

Thanks Allotment Boy, I'll give that a try, but difficult to get at the threads.

  • @Lizzie27 One other trick we use to use for seized / painted bolts was to try and tighten them just a little more this usually is enough to crack the seal then as AB say's a little WD40 or paint stripper should do the trick.
    Good luck.

Pulled out the old cosmos plants, OH dug over and raked area, then we planted 80 odd wallflowers. Green bin emptied this morning, now half full again with chopped up cosmos (and 2 weeks until it's emptied). Still have another 50 wallflowers to plant plus 40 bellis daises but have had enough so time for a cup of tea. Oh for the days when l could garden for hours !
  • Had another good day in the garden and down on the allotment.
some of my plants and bulbs arrived today 200 Jimmy and 200 Ronaldo Tulips, 400 daffodil Terwegan and 60 Geranium phaeum 'Samobor' so I'm going to busy for the next few days.

Thanks Hampshire Hog, we did try to do that without any success. It's really difficult as the nuts are on the underneath of the seat and bolts the other side - I need longer arms!

  • Wow @Hampshire_Hog that's a lot of stuff. I thought I had issues with spring bulbs and geranium phaeum. What are you planning, if you don't mind me asking?

Yesterday I planted up an area recently bulbed. Still have more tinkering to do further along in the border but it involves moving perennials and I'm running out of water so will hold that thought.

Planted 46 bulbs, but 20 I'd forgotten I had so didn't bring down the left-to-plant score. I also cheated and planted another 20, miniature daffs, in pots as I'm not sure where the others are in the mini daff bed.

Moved two hefty Francoa Sonchifolia and once they were moved added ferns, geranium phaeum and a hellebore to a section of the shade border. The shady side is pretty much all G phaeum, ferns and hellebore at the mo. Wanting to add 5 roses but my Rose list has been scuppered. I've been ogling a rose for nearly a year and the only supplier I can find has discontinued it. Having to remuse as I particularly wanted a pale yellow, loose petalled sort of fellow.

Dug out a dogwood, had to be done, but l was cursing the roots ! Still haven't planted the rest of the wallflowers or bellis daises, and forgot l have also got 20 foxgloves to plant as well !
Forecast is dry for the rest of the week and then heavy rain for most of Saturday, so am determined to get most of them in the ground by then. Kettle will be boiling a lot, l suspect.  :)
  • I've ran out of water now so have quit for today. Rain is forecast though.

This morning I planted 13 bulbs, new daffs and 3 allium purple calla. Have some of those already and they are good for coming back each year.

In the same area (shade border) moved in a comfrey, 2 geranium phaeum, a hellebore and 2 lamium orvala from elsewhere and planted a new fern. Oh also a new phaeum (to me) Nightshade.

Have planned a few other areas but bin is full also and I need to fix a fence and buy new trellis before planting up the rest of the shade border. Intending to add a couple of actaea and hesperantha from elsewhere in the garden to extend the interest through the seasons. (Like one of those proper gardeners you hear about).

Still not done the wallflowers or bellis, but at least the foxgloves are now planted!  Also planted some allium pupereum. Very warm, thermometer shows 26 degrees in the sun, so have left wallflowers etc until tomorrow. Still showing rain for Saturday, so l am determined to get them done !
