@Lizzie27, haven't watched GW yet, interesting about Monty's comments. I will keep my potted tulips behind the greenhouse next to the wall where they are pretty sheltered. I have "pot feet" to hopefully stop them getting too waterlogged, and some old trellis l can use to hopefully keep any squirrels out! I have grown crocus and narcissi in pots in the greenhouse and check them over once a week. If the sun comes out and the temperature rockets, l water them from the base and make sure l get rid of any excess water well before it gets dark. As for doing any gardening today, no chance due to the much needed rain
Just done some Daffodil bulb planting - in pots and dotted around garden. Lifted a patch of garden-variety Crocosomia and dug down a bit to replace with Daffodil bulbs... what a ridiculous amount of corms!!! Only in an area half a foot square!
Brrr! Frost this morning, had to break ice on bird bath and car all froz. Does it normally do that in Oct?
Dug up a few campanula persicifolia, some of them are too lazy to flower so am going to group them all together in one place so I won't notice. Haven't replanted them yet, they'll be alright.
Made diagrams of some awkward areas and made a nice table in order to compare rose prices. It's procrastination but also jolly good fun
OH brought back a great big pot bound hosta from MIL's garden. Managed to get it out without too much difficulty and split it in to four. Potted them up and l "acquired" some small sections that l potted up as well. He also brought back a plant she wanted rid of - helpful people on the id thread l posted have identified it as a peony. When l told him, he said "Oh, l will see if she wants it back". Er, no,l don't think so! I can always find somewhere for it Still have tulips to pot up and old plants to clear out of greenhouse, maybe tomorrow.
I picked up a snickers wrapper from amongst the dahlias which had blow in from somewhere.
also continued with drilling into our concrete fence posts, plugging and screwing in vine eyes. Had to recharge drill batteries several times. Tedious job, but only two holes left to do now.
cut a semi circle in the lawn next to house to show where a climbing rose is going to go, but didn't have time to actually dig it up
I spent a yesterday digging up the Marguarite daisies (that have grown huge) and potting them ready to go into the greenhouse now the mornings are getting a little cold. Also dug up the coleous to bring indoors and a Snap dragon i have to try to over winter as my OH loves it. Potted some bulbs and had a general tidy up. Woke up this morning and the squirrels must of had a huge garden party and dug everything up. Bulbs, knocked over terracotta pots smashing them and just dug into 90% of the pots in the garden. Spent most of today tidying up.
Planted up a border with 60 wallflowers and 20 tulips. I know i should wait until next month, but i've put compost in the hole Instead of the soil. Monty said that they're alright in pots with compost so they won't get tulip fire. So i thought that it might be alright in the ground.
Cleared out plants from greenhouse and moved in potted bulbs. Found a nice spot for peony, so planted that, also 25 allium azureum at the back of the bed. Saturday's rain made it easy to dig. Did a load of general tidying, green waste bin is nearly full again and they don't collect until next Tuesday. Got quite breezy later this pm, so have come in for a cup of tea and possible biscuit.(Who am l kidding ?)
We took the plunge and cut the wild flower area this morning. Before cutting we dug out some dock and elm that were growing in with the wild flowers, I am sure there will be others over the years. We mowed the full area and left the cuttings to drop their seeds. I really didn't want to do this yet, but most of the flowers had finished and the seed heads were ripe. I will get a picture for tomorrow. In a couple of days we will rake up the cuttings.
We also dug out a disappointing white flowered buddelia from our new border which hadn't grown as well as I had hoped - I will replace it with a white flowering hebe which attracts bees.
