  • I'm intrigued by the nectaroscordum 'Tripe', Victoria Sponge.  Wonder how it got its name?
Hi Liriodendron, it's Tripedale, sorry not Tripe, but I don't how it got the name. I prefer Tripe  ;)

Victoria , if everybody did some thing to land/kerb/pavement by there property it would make a difference , so still impressed 😉
Thanks GWRS, I will go out and edge this weekend so it looks extra smart (and find a nice weed to replace the hollyhock).

  • Planted up an area I removed a giant campanula from yesterday.

Planted 15 camassia, Maybelle and Semi Plena, and over planted with a recently purchased fern, Polystichum Dahlem, a geranium called Spessart which I'm hoping is tough and ground covering, geum totally tangerine, pulmonarias and Veronica gentianoides.

Just need to add a rose and more camassia when I get them.

  • Busy morning as we dug out another dozen or so dock weed plants in the field and erected the pollination notice.  We also planted out a beautiful Rowan tree sapling, took photos of some of the fungi in our garden before the killer mower decimated them and cleared a section of the pond surface.  All good stuff.

Moved a Gaura,  bit risky but it had to be done, so if it survives it's a bonus! Planted a origanum Herrenhausen. Cut down one of the helianthus Lemon Queen, to find neighbour's ivy has made its way under the fence and is rooting into my flower bed. Managed to pull most of it up, but there was a lot of muttering involved. Some of the bare rooted wallflowers l planted have curled up and died. They seem to all be the mixed dwarf ones, so replacements need to be found next week. Lovely and warm in the sun, may possibly be foggy in the morning, so made the most of it. Soil is lovely to work at the moment!

Asked my husband to dig up two clumps of aconitum and one of veronica and binned the lot. The Aconitum was past its best and I was always a bit wary of it because of its poisonous nature. Moved a recently planted rudbeckia from Great Dixter into the spot where the veronica had been. Weeded the Wisteria border, found that my lovely purple irises had encroached on the spot where my "posh" snowdrops were planted so dug some of the irises up.  I also dug up a biggish clump of nerines that hadn't flowered this year because they had been shaded by the wisteria/clematis combo. Not sure what to do with the nerines or irises now, probably wrong time of year, could I pot them up perhaps?  A lovely sunny an warm day in the garden - perfect October weather.

Pruned back an Abelia, now flowers finished, as it was rising up the dining room window. It responded well to a trim this time last year. I collected another bucket load of apples (probably the last big haul). To be honest, I just sat drinking tea for the rest of the afternoon, admiring the colours around.

Cut the grass, hoovering up lots of leaves, and raked more off the gravel patio.  Planted the last of the bulbs, including some in pots.  Weeded, tidied up the strawberry bed, and started demolishing the runner bean net.  Then it got dark... but not before I'd been on slug patrol in the rockery.  Lots of small slugs hiding in the crowns of my favourite plants.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Lovely day for gardening but busy with other projects - however we did prune our Masquerade climbing rose this afternoon - this is just the first cut as there were some tall straggly pieces growing into the gutter of our house. There are still some flowers in bloom - yellow and pink in colour. Picture shows it looking good in June/July time.
  • Nice rose above, I have a bicolour on my wish list.

I had a good day in the garden, hope you all did also.

Got all but 6 of the remaining bulbs planted, plus a few I dug up by mistake, might pot them. Moved some oriental poppies around and planted some stuff I've had sat in pots for ages.

Planned where I can put some asters (or whatever they might be called) that are in the wrong place, floppy for example and need something to lean on to get some height. Also planned where to put 12 penstemon I need to move from my front garden so I can get the drive done.

Planned a little rose bed I am making. It's a border that has never looked right, I think because it gets direct sun in Spring and then gets danker as the year goes on due to foliage blocking the sun and then the sun being lower. Has a rose in there already, the beautiful Summer Sweetheart, a Harkness rose I believe, going to add another 3 roses, all floribunda, and pad out with oriental poppies, hollyhocks and orpine. Then hope for the best.

Moved a big plant that I think is probably a centaurea, I don't remember it's name or where I got it from. Looking a bit sad now although I watered it heavily before and aft. Might have to cut it back. Moved a persicaria and swapped it with another I hope will grow taller, planted a fern next to it, Polystichum munitum.
