Been waiting for enough rain to soften the ground under trees to plant some crocus and get the last of the Fritillarias in.
Rain has not happened, so used dynamite to plant bulbs.
Forgot exactly where other Frits are, so have potted them up and I will plant them out when the others come through in spring.
Top dressed twenty odd box plants I have had growing on for years, but never planted.
  • @diana 1 I share your sentiments re chemicals , though nematodes are a biological control and very specific to that one host.

Volunteer day at Capel today we positioned a large rock in the Japanese garden & planted ferns around it.

Beautiful acer. Wish l could grow them, but my garden is too sunny. We have had heavy rain this morning and garden was soaking, so no gardening for me today, sadly.

Lovely Acer, I haven't got one of the red ones but am thinking about it.  I just pottered after lunch and decided to put some soluble fertiliser on two ailing bronzy-looking box balls in big pots in the hope that might green them up. Also dug out a self seeded verbena bon. from one of the pots and replanted it in the sleeper bed.  Our green manure is sprouting like mad so hope it doesn't get drowned tomorrow when the anticipated storm arrives.  Hatches battened down!

AnniD, our posts coincided. I read today that acers need sunshine which I was surprised out. I think the purple and red ones do, but not the pale green or yellowey ones. I have two "Orange Dream" acers, one of which gets more sun (we face south) and scorches , the other in a slightly more dappled shady place seems to fair better. We've also got alkaline clay soil, but they don't seem to mind, so you could perhaps try one in your garden.

Hi @Lizzie27, trouble is, my garden is also South facing and it bakes in the summer. There is a tiny bit in one corner that is the shadiest and even then it's only for a short time. I tried an acer a few years back but it fried. I felt so guilty !

Oh well, sounds like your garden won't suit at all. Shame, as acers are so lovely.

Yes, l am resigned to going to Westonbirt or Batsford to get my fix ! Weather is very wild and windy tonight, don't think l will be doing a lot tomorrow either  :/
  • The Acer in the picture is not one of mine sadly but I do have quite a few. My garden faces due south we have the red leaved ones in the sun & the green at the bottom in more shade. Some are in pots some in the ground some got a bit crinkly this year as it was sooo hot but as they are deciduous we will get a nice crop of fresh leaves next year.
