Gardengirl, can’t really understand why people put “ rubbish “ in allotments
Anyway Spent today mending all the broken fence post , still need to do some fence repairs
Need to get on with the pruning , noticed today broad beans coming up under clouch
Bought some seed potatoes from Wilkos yesterday , first Earlies and main crop plus some more Shallots

Spuds and shallots aren't on sale here at Wilko' yet. There is a local potato day tomorrow, though, so hoping to get some seed spuds.

GWRS-I still need to do some fence repairs but today wasn't the day for it, as it rained from about 1.30 onwards.

Went to a potato fair this morning. Seed potatoes could be bought singularly for 20p so came away with three organic varieties and 15 spuds.

    Very cold here today.

I am going to make a plan of what to grow and where on the plot and was thinking of including Jerusalem artichokes this year, are they difficult to grow, how high do they grow and do they flower, I'm given to understand they are related to the sunflower family.

They need a full sun area they grow about 2 metres high have small sunflowers on them when large roots - not difficult to grow  - have you tried eating them before or do you want to grow them as a screen / wind break?
I am going to dig some up soon if you would like some sent to you?

Gg. The potato day was Lancaster, Lancashire.

Was going to grow Jerusalem Artichokes as a winter veg. It sounds low maintance. Would love some tubers, happy to pay for postage.
  • Talking about potatoes,Did you know that Jersey royals (1 st harvest are the best as they have been sown using local seaweed as fertiliser. I found this out when on holiday in jersey last year

Jolly G. I've also found that spuds grow well when seaweed is used as a fertiliser. I'm currently making some from seaweed washed up on our local beach. Should be ready in a few weeks, it's also good as a foilage spray for vegs and flowers.

I'm going to grow some spuds in bags this year and will mix it in with the compost.

GWRS. Spuds, onions and shallots went on sale here at Wilko's on Saturday, I was lucky to get shallots when I went in today such was the speed at which they have sold. Red shallots had sold out totally.
