Rgirl ... I've been clinging to those theories but because of my enforced inactivity this year I've tried to eat even more healthily of late ... almost always have muesli and skimmed milk for breakfast and eat fresh fruit every day and loadsa veg ... however it does, as you say, seem to be the lack of exercise that's raising my cholesterol ... well, that and coupled with the fact that I appear to have inherited Ma's high triglyceride condition. Not sure what I can do about the exercise thing with the current knee problems, and nothing I can do about my genetics

That's annoying, Dove. Take heart from the fact that even if the healthy eating hasn't impacted your cholesterol, I'll bet it's done you a whole lot of good in other ways .
Thanks for the garlic tips everyone. Pat, I've got that issue of GW so I'll look it up, thanks so much. And GWRS I hadn't thought of Wilko - they're a fairly new discovery for me - so I might look in there too if I get a chance. Will support the garden centre first though . Raisingirl, I'm in SE London so not too cold or exposed here. Frosty today however, and the raised beds are not close to the house. Well, not by London standards anyway!
Stew made, washing hung up on the Sheila Maid. Off to GC and to visit my brother now. Have a good afternoon all.

'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.'
I think that a tendency to high cholesterol is inherited. One of my daughters has a slight problem, 1st OH had high cholesterol, yet she is skinny as a rake. I am lucky in that I have always had a low blood pressure and pulse, but I have to admit that now I've lost over a stone and gone from size 16 back to 14 I feel much better and more comfortable. Mustn't eat loads of anything, but a decent helping of veg can stop you feeling hungry.
Difficult when you have a broken foot, a thyroid problem and a gammy knee, not fair.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Eating an avocado a day for 3 weeks is supposed to lower bad cholesterol Dove. Worth trying along with oats and pistachios between now and 7/12. I have a similar problem cos of the stupid toe. Cholesterol up a bit but well withing tolerances fortunately. Just blubbery from not being able to walk the dogs every day. It's flared up again so I'm off to see the doc this pm to see about X-rays and treatment, if any.
Been to do an SM raid this am and popped into a GC selling plants off cheaply. None that I wanted but I did get 5 fake terracotta pots at 60% off. They'll keep my new clems happy for the winter and the fat juicy blackberry plant will keep OH happy. They even had plant labels.
Popped into another shop for a couple of tupperwares and they had Xmas baby socks for 2€. Oh thought we should get some for Cosmos but I sincerely hope he'll have healed by then.
No frosts here and it was 15C when we set off at 11am. Very odd.
Glad you're feeling better Busy. Flying or driving? Flying with a cold always makes my ears and sinuses feel even worse.
Glad you've finally got some decent rain Pat.
LG - I bought some garlic the other day. No idea what kind other than pinkish. Tried it twice in Belgium and it froze to a mush. I trust that won't be a problem here.
Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
Dove & others I too was told you can't fight your genetics re: Cholesterol etc. As I have said before I am skinny as a rake have low / Normal BP "exemplary diet" (consultants words not mine) she admitted that if she was assessing me as me alone I would not need a statin but as Father & 2 other family members have died of CHD it instantly puts me in a high risk category. My good Cholesterol is always higher than my bad but it pushes the total up above the threshold can't win
I am on lowest dose & weakest formulation which I take with evening meal rather than last thing at night as it made me "run hot" at night.
Bought a lovely grey mullet at the SM for dinner tonight. Looking up recipes led me to Atul Kochar who specified chat masala as an ingredient so googled that and found I need black salt which I had to google too. This healthy eating business can get a bit circuitous! Local, unrefined sea salt will have to do.

Ian, that's interesting ... last time my GP and I spoke about this she filled in a questionnaire and I came out at low risk despite the high cholesterol ... both parents lasted into their 90s, despite Ma's high triglycerides. However, I have the added problem of being hypothyroid which can cause high cholesterol as well as difficulty losing weight and joint and muscle problems. The other 'interesting' factor is that statins can cause problems for those of us who are hypothyroid as they can exacerbate the muscle problems and pains ... trying to stay healthy is complex ... however I've added a generous amount of pistachio nuts to my container of oat muesli

Please let us know if pistachio nuts work for you as well as Joyce, sounds a much more pleasant way of lowering cholesterol.
I've been outside sucking up leaves with the leaf blower. I now have 7 sacks of future leaf mould.
Farmer has been, cleaned out old hay from summer shelter with hos tractor and scraped up the mud around it down to the rock, so much limestone rock here, but sometimes it's useful. He's put 8 big round bales new hay into the winter shelter and 2 bales in the summer shelter. The horses will stay in summer quarters until we get back from Norfolk then they'll go in the winter paddock by the house, easier to keep an eye on them in winter and fill their water when it's below zero.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
The issue of treatment for high cholesterol, is incredibly complicated.
Absolute level of cholesterol, is far less important than a risk score which takes into account multiple factors.
Not all doctors believe that people with moderately raised cholesterol need treatment.
I have been asked by lots of people, whether or not they should go on treatment and genuinely do not feel I can advise, without recommending that they read a pile of literature larger than War and Peace before giving any advice.
