Can't bear the thought of fire destroying homes and lives even when accidental and nothing to do with builders/architects/planners getting it so badly wrong thru incompetence or greed or stupidity.
It may not be any of those. Fire safety is taken very seriously, and I don't believe anyone involved in a project of that scale would knowingly cut corners to such an extent. It is possible that a safe construction was installed incorrectly. Quite possibly the material was tested and shown to be 'safe', installed properly, all done as it should be. The regulations are not foolproof, there is no objective way to say 'this is safe' - all that compliance with Building Regulations means is there have never been any occasions when it was found not to be safe. Then something like this shows that (maybe) the test conditions were not onerous enough, so that will be changed in future, or the spacing of the fire barriers was inadequate, so that might be amended.
Something has certainly gone horribly wrong. That isn't necessarily anyone's fault.

There are so many potentials that need to be explored. I for one do not envy the LFB in their task once the initial battle is over. I expect that battle will last several days yet.
Evening all, Didn't find out about the fire until lunchtime. It's just terrible, can't imagine what it must be like to be trapped in such a situation. Also feel sorry for those who are now living in fear in similar blocks that have been cladded. It sounds like this may be at the root of the problem.
I can't believe that these buildings don't have sprinkler systems it seems insane.
Wasn't there a dreadful fire in east London not so long ago where building regs were found not to have been followed and fire inspections not done and so on and so forth? I can't believe it's normal for a block of flats to go up in a fireball in just one hour so something somewhere was badly wrong be it design, materials or regs not being followed.
You have to be able to get people out safely even if they lose their belongings. Nor should you have to throw children out of windows. It's appalling.

There was a fire in a block of flats in Camberwell in 2009 - not sure what investigations revealed.
Night night folks ... The injured, bereaved and homeless are in my thoughts, as are those in the emergency services, NHS and all those who are offering care and support to friends and strangers alike.

It's hard to believe that the fires are still going on some of the floors. I couldn't help watching BBC World News for hours in the hope that somehow the fires could be stopped. Some hope!
Evening/morning all, I've been working until 1:00 am and now too awake to sleep if you understand. It silly to be still up, I have a meeting at 8:00 in the morning but my head is buzzing. ?
In fact, I am working all day tomorrow one way or another until late, Friday two meetings and Saturday Charlie is going/will be taken to two end of term fêtes, for which I am required to bake cakes. How did this happen? Working Saturday night until 2am , but last shift so how bad can it be??
Ramble ramble: wedding today was 32 New Yorkers, 6 staff waiting on them, plus 2 babysitters for 3 sleeping babies. Father of the bride and the bride said they never drive, bride can't even drive, they take taxis everywhere, very expensive here in rural France. Despite affluence very nice people apart from a weird brother of the groom for whom the groom apologized profusely, several times over. We were there for their every need, but they did tip well so not complaining. Just find it difficult to get my head around such wealth, 32 people flew in from USA for one day for a wedding in a château. ??
Second ramble, then I must go to bed, the moon is beautiful tonight. I'm sat in the garden, next to my newly planted window boxes ready for new house , the sky is black as night but the moon Is deep yellow with a golden glow. I wish my camera could do it justice.
Oops, 3rd ramble, got some beautiful bunting on the way for CdeG, very excited, chintz mix, says Tea Room in the middle, photos soon. Also met owners for the first time, very nice, they live in Prestwick but lady has a beautiful Glasgow accent, very soft. They are throwing in a whole pile of useful stuff for £800, including a washing machine and a beautiful, never used sofa bed in beautiful cherry wood. Just need to find the dosh, but a definite bargain.
So, goodnight all or should that be good morning.
Short version of above - I'm over excited, high as a kite, buzzing and no alcohol or other substance abuse involved. Embarrassing I know but I'm happy.?

Dove what are you doing up and about so early/late?
Lovely sunny morning again, but very hot already. I'm up early to water my window boxes before I set off to my meeting. So nice to be gardening with purpose again.
Have a good day all.

Today will see more paperwork, and then a rejig in the greenhouse ready for a weekend of seeing family and meetings. The 30'C predicted weather is welcomed ... buy only once I've got my plants safe!

Terrible thing to have happened.
