Leaving aside the rights and wrongs of people being allowed to spend their own money on whatever they choose to spend it on (I thought that was one of the benefits of living in a democracy) isn't it the case that this particular piece work of art sparks a reaction in people?
Whether it be the stuff of nightmares or just a bit spooky - to me it appears to be a powerful bit of work. Not something I'd want on my living room wall but it stirs something deep inside. Surely that is what good art does? - whether or not you like it.
It's a large sum of money to be sure and I can't see the value - but the person who bought it clearly has that money to spend. So long as (s)he didn't earn it through exploitation, sexploitation, supplying arms or chemical weapons , drugs or by any other illegal means I think it's entirely up to him / her how they spend / invest it.
I actually find it more disturbing that people with not a lot of money spend a fortune on a wedding day or buy extortionately priced designer label clothes and accessories. What about those who think nothing of shelling out £100 at the hairdressers or on a night out on the p**s when they are struggling to pay the rent and other day to day bills? (Yes - I do know people that do that).
Sorry - that's all made me quite cross. Rant over.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
Many people consider what I spend on a meal out, or a bottle of wine, obscene, but I earned it, I have never avoided my taxes and I think I should be able to spend it how I like.
I have also been told, that I cannot possibly be a socialist, because of the way I choose to spend money. I do not agree, but I wouldn't would I ?
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Absolutely. I know people who think buying ornamental plants is a waste of money and find the time and effort involved in making a garden and nurturing plants an utter waste. Our cattle farmer neighbours find us bizarre because we paid people to tow a trailer of plants behind their removel trucks and we use tap water to keep them going and buy compost to improve the soil for the ones we've already planted. They also though the rigid mesh fences we've had built to make a separate garden in the side were for the dogs. No - for supporting roses and clems and honeysuckle. Clearly we are deranged.
On the other hand, my old garden group friend who came to stay last night en route from Portugal home to Belgium is clearly delighted that I can tell her which plants in my new foliage border and those still waiting to be planted out came from which member of the group.
I have to say most art, especially religious and modern, leaves me cold and I don't like to be shouted at by modern music either but I wouldn't stop anyone else indulging as long as they don't inflict it on me and have earned their funds honestly.
On a brighter note, as I left for the SM raid yesterday I spotted a hoopoe fossicking about in the grass verge by our gate. Gorgeous..

Absolutely agree with you T'bird. After all - look what gardeners spend their money on
Joking apart - yes, if they've worked hard for their money and not exploited others, noone should criticise what they spend it on. I also know someone who moans about the fact they had to pay to install new windows in their house - 'why should I, when I pay rent' - it's a rent and buy property. 'Look at your contract' was my reply '- if you own part of it, then it'll state what you have to pay for, as opposed to the housing association maintaining it'. Too busy going on holiday three or four times a year though. Priorities are very different
doc- you're right. You've studied for a long, long time, and worked your a**e off - so if you wanted to spend every penny on a garden full of gnomes, it's your choice!
On a cheerier note - my clems have arrived and look lovely. They're residing in a corner, having had a little drink
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I did say " something is worth what someone is prepared to spend on it" and " I do hope they love it" I have no issue how folk spend their money, I just can't help thinking it's a bit of "emperor's new clothes" He's flavour of the month it seems, but it's not for me. ( you could buy about 6 Monets with that money but probably "only " 2 or 3 Monets a few years back)
I remember a stink being kicked up a few years back because Elton John was reported to have spent £15,000 on cut flowers in a year. So what, as you say, he earned it legally by making a product folk spent their money on. And I'm sure the florist, delivery driver, wholesaler, grower et al were delighted to have his custom.

Couldn't agree with you more on that one Hosta. I'm slightly biased when it comes to old Elt, but he's probably put every bit as much back into 'the system' as he's ever had from it, and not just financially either. He's worked his butt off earning it. Bless his little spangly socks
Are you enjoying the new job Clari?
I'm feeling very idle. Should really go and do something other than making soup and footering on here.

You be all been very busy and full of thoughts today.
