My mother always put my BIL out before midnight....he would lift a bit of coal from the bunker and bring it in for luck, as the first footer. in those days, we all had coal fires. I liked to hear the sound of the boats tooting at midnight.
I spent a lovely NY's eve in Perth [ Scotland ] a few years ago. Along with prodigious consumption of Vodka and Irn Brew [ yes really ] first footing was performed, a few times. Not sure we were welcome.
Next day climbed Schiehallion, was not at all well.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
When we're at MIL's for New Year she sends my black haired OH out of the back door at midnight and he has to come back in by the front door (unlocked especially for the occasion) bearing salt and a piece of coal. MIL's family were Andersons and I believe there were Scottish ancestors.
My family (strict if not Strict Methodists from Bedfordshire) never did anything of the sort, having no truck with such superstitious nonsense My maternal grandmother was a Mitchell and I believe there's Scottish blood a long way back, but it's pretty well diluted by now.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

S.Yorkshire/Derbyshire border
pdoc....the problem would be due to the Irn Bru rather than the vodka
