  • Good morning folks image  I tried to get on here earlier, but the site kept dropping out ... I was on my phone ... now I've got OH's laptop up and running image

Pp, consider an Alder Carr ... lots around boggy bits of East Anglia ... one of my favourite forms of woodland - especially when the alder is coppiced https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carr_(landform)

    Clari ((hugs))

Hosta - have a safe journey and a wonderful holiday ((hugs))

Still quite foggy here, but not as bad as it has been ... we're off to MIL's tomorrow so apart from a bit of shopping and washing I'm going to have a lazy day.

Have a fab holiday Hosta - wishing you lots of sunshine image and lots of sleepimage

off to the hospital to visit Dad today - yes, he's still in there.  Doing well and desperate to get out, but they don't seem to have the staff around to discharge him .....all a bit odd.

Thinking about some New Years resolutions too .....just read about one that involved planting all new purchases on return from the GC, instead of creating an ever expanding plant creche.  Do you think I could manage that ?

Chicky..."No" to the planting image  I have plants in the cold frame waiting to be planted...not tender ones.

Hope your dad gets out of hospital soon.

  • I've had the same New Year's Resolution for several years, and I've kept it too, though some years better than others.

It is very simple - 'I must make more effort' !

So when I find myself thinking 'I can't be bothered ' or I'll do that later' or 'That'll do' or whatever, then I remember it and sometimes, even if not always, end up with a better resultimage

And I'd better remember it now and get off my bottom and get something useful doneimage

Fairy - had to smile.  The one thing I miss about working in an office is not being able to go in at the weekend and use a huge conference table to cut out curtains and linings.

Chicky - Low staffing at Xmas.   Hope he gets out soon.  When Possum was just coming up to 2 her dad fell on the stairs carrying her on December 30th.  Snapped the neck of her femur.  Had to wait till early Jan for consultants to come back from their Xmas/NY break so she was held in traction for 6 days.  I was beside myself.

PP - a pond sounds good.  Not ash as it's all dying except for one or two rare resistant trees.  Maybe a weeping willow?  Beautiful and suck up huge amounts of water.

Clari - your man needs sorting.  The coldest bit of winter is still to come.  Time to get serious.

Hosta - we are indeed cattle on airplanes these days but that's the price of wanting to pay bus fare prices to fly.    There was a group of soldiers in battle dress patrolling Nantes airport yesterday, complete with long barreled, automatic slung at the ready.    Possum's flight was delayed 2 hours cos of fog at either end.

It's foggy again today and cold.   Not at all inviting but there's a huge plant nursery nearby with 10% off plants today so I want to go and explore.   Other than that and walkies it's a hibernating day and cleaning for the NY.

Have a good day all.  I hope all ailments are on the wain.   Any plans for this evening?  It's another big feast day here with fireworks at midnight but we're staying tucked up with dogs and kittens, working on getting to know each other and relax.   Bonzo still gets the shakes when he sees kittens but is learning to relax, slowly.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

Morning all/ afties Pat - although I expect you're busy with your visitor...image

Windy here but the rain hasn't arrived yet. Yes  LP - to be cold overnight but a good day for walking tomorrow so that's what I intend. Projected temps on Munros are well below zero and another ten or more to add for the wind chill. I may need a simmit.... image

chicky - no chance of that resolution ...image

Bit frustrating if your dad can't get out due to red tape, but as long as he's improving, that's the main thing image

I loathe airports Hosta, so that makes flying anywhere a bit tricky. image  Have a lovely time when you get there....the holiday I mean, not the airport....image

  • Morning all. Hi Pat. Haven't seen you for ages. I thought maybe you'd run off with a kiltie!!! image

Lantana I have a pond/sump about thirty x twenty which I pump off now and again and that helps a little. It's a natural pond, surprise surprise so it lets the level down a bit...till it rains again.

I'm liking the look of that Carr Dove/Lesley. It's not far off what's here already in some parts so it might be less work to go with it. I'll phone those woodland chappies after the holidays. They're not too far away so they're bound to have experience of what others have done around here. There's a weird stand of trees nearby too so I'll find out who owns them and what's their plan. Something has to change before I need a Jolly Roger for my John Deere!!!

Happy Holidays Hosta. Can't bear it above 20º here but on holiers it's a whole different matter.

    Clari...trade him in!!! image

  • Morning everyone ?, evening pat, hope your "friend" doesn't hang about too long ??. Absolutely Baltic here today and thick fog so ithink it will be more seed packets to sort out, in front of the fire of course ? as I really don't function well when it's cold. We had -3 here during the night. Have made a big pot of pumpkin soup and a quiche plus a Victoria sponge with jam and mascaponi filling..but I doubt there will be any of that left come t-time ?. Hope everyone that has to be driving etc today takes their time and all those off or ready to go off on their hot hollibobs, has a great time ?. ?? to everyone under the weather.

obelixx - we have a large table at work for assembling and glueing the rosettes so it's ideal for curtains. Hardest bit is having it clear for any length of time! I had loads of room in my old house and the one round the corner as the rooms were much bigger, but I managed  image

Ppauper - do you have trouble with ash dieback over there? To the best of my knowledge, it's not widespread in Scotland, although there were reports of it a few years ago in a number of locations, so I was wondering if you have a bit of protection from it.
