Since Oh has retired we treat Sunday as a day of rest from gardening, lucky us! Having said that we measured out for the new beetroot bed - (most of the seeds are still in the packet) and he washed the car!
Had a busy day as the weather was very pleasant. OH did a pond patch mend whilst I cut the old heads off Hydrangeas, lifted and divided some Day Lilies and hardy geraniums, checked through all pots and plants in the Winter Snug area, sorted some pots for seed sowing, generally pottered, oh - and hung out some washing (1st time this year!). Still have loads to do plus need some ideas for a small space in the 'Orange' corner... needs to be slug-resistant and non-toxic to cats if possible.
Deadheaded the brown, crisp flower clusters on my hydrangea bush, since the green shoots are coming out underneath them. (Wish I waited until after Easter now I know we could be due for a white Easter!)
Replenished the top (1") of soil of the large container, sporting my smaller bay tree, with fresh compost.
Surveyed the anaemic-looking short stump (a spindly 9" high) of my skimmia, devoid now of leaves. Cut back 2 of its now woody/dead short branches....hmmm....does anyone know if a skimmia can recover without leaves?
A 'weed' is just a plant in the wrong place - subjective!
Another sunny morning, all housework up together,so will crack on in the garden! I've got slab moving to do,also firm up the rocks in the new rockery,as they have to hold back soil.It won't be so imperative once the perennials get a hold! Looking forward to the day!😁
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@wild flower re the skimmia if there are buds on the stems it should produce fresh leaves give it a spray (or fine rose on watering can) with Seaweed tonic it may help encourage fresh bud break.
Beautiful calm day here so was spurred on to repot lavendar plugs, check out the acorns that I planted last autumn (80% of them have rooted), sown more flower seeds under a cloche in the greenhouse/conservatory and spent 30 mins watering in it. Also planted out two more strawberry plants. Hoping it doesn't get colder as predicted over Easter.
Potted on the lunaria.....ajuga and lupin seedlings which were planted last October. ....and survived the snow. Slugs ate the rest. .....I will definitely do further Autumn sowings.....delighted with the results

Thanks for your reply. Alas, tis a puny light green (verging on yellow) straight stem so I guess it is doomed. No point in providing a little horse manure and/or a nitrogen tonic then?

I did the first trays and pots of seed-sowing today! I don't have a greenhouse so it's windowsills for the tomatoes, herbs and a some flowers. I will stagger some sowing as I only have a couple of suitable areas for the indoor seedlings to grow. I have done 'tumbling' tomatoes this year for a change.
