That's not too bad Iain, I would be devastated if they had ruined my crop, but a few nibbles is a small price to pay.
I have moved a couple of geums that were planted in the wrong place, dug up a clump of Hellebores with the intention of putting them in another place (which isn't ready yet), sat by the pond to enjoy the sound of the water, watched a little greenfinch having a long drink and fed the neighbours at lunch time.
Watered some stuff that is flowering or yet to, asters & co, actaeas, phlox and persicaria. The latter likely don't need my assistance but I am rather fond of them. Seem to have lost Aster Twilight which is rather vexing, hopefully it'll turn up somewhere.
I've found a use for pretty much everything on my bin list, have now turned my attention to floppy scabious and unimpressive chrysanths. I've decided to get rid of all the pink and white rosebay 'herb too. I know how brilliant it is for everyone and everything but it's too sprawly.
Mixed some hardy annual seed to sow shortly in the garden, will sow the rest up the lotment. Attempting phacelia again, was a complete failure this year, the patch is covered in bindweed and other cr?p.
Wasn't going to order any plants til the garden's more organised but I forgot I needed some clems. Ordered them today, summer sale on so I got two free
Doghouse , have you thoight about making jam with Quinces , I have a tree at allotment , it had lots of fruit forming then they disappeared ! Most strange , assumed birds eat them
Dug out most of an old bush today that had taken over in a border (everybody here says it is a thug...just lots of green with a pink ferny flowery thingy on top!), then cut back a large overgrown Berberis. Put lots of fresh compost around, fitted new bamboo edging strip, moved a rose bush into the space, planted Lavenders around, then some Honeybells and Daffodils. Mulched! Watered!! Now I'm knackered, but it all looks much better
Painting fence panels tomorrow...just don't know when I've had enough me!
Rather you than me Doghouse, (although I have had reason in the past to wade around in a koi pond), I hope it was a warm day!
Today I did more planning for a winter move round. I'm extending the lawn and making a new beach for the pond in a flower bed that always looks unimpressive.
I sorted some hardy annual flower seeds for the allotment as I don't need all of the space for fruit and veg. I don't think all of them are suitable for direct sowing but I'm trying to reduce the amount of seed trays and pots all over the place.
Planted two ivy cuttings that I took the other year and were starting to flail about. Hopefully they'll grow behind a cotoneaster shrub and onto the flat roof of my shed, but we'll see.
Planted some foxgloves that self sowed themselves into pots. Reintroduced them to the shady side of the garden as they had migrated into the sunny side. Also planted a young lychnis coronaria I had in a pot and two little hollyhocks along the front railings.
Unpacked a clem delivery, really nice plants for a end of season sale, no different from normal stock I would say. I can't plant any of them yet but they'll be alright in their pots.
Rescued a large white caterpillar from my ivy cuttings and put it on the nasturtiums and admired the goldfinch flock as they swooped over, think I need to buy some more feeders?
