I joined you in leaf collecting today lydiaann. Collected another 4 big black sacks full of sycamore, lime and oak leaves. Yes, it certainly is a good warming job for a cooler day. Also potted up more seedlings in the GH - it was nice to get out of the wind and showers for a while in there.
Probably too late now GWRS I would get them started in late January, that is when I sow my second batch. I give them a little heat until they germinate, then out to a cold greenhouse.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Dug over a bit of ground, put in a lot of compost. A lot of clay underneath. It used to be mash land before it was farm land. There's still some ditches around.
I do pull the leaves from under the shrubs as they can precipitate rot in the roots in really damp weather (particularly in our heavy clay), but I do let them lie in all the clear spaces and over the herbaceous perennials...as you say, a terrific mulch. There'll be plenty of that this year!
You been busy bob, i agree with earlier post, many more leaves here than i've seen for several years, but very few acorns, about 5 years ago we had acorns the size of pecan nuts, strange isn't it?
Bob, when you said you dropped the bucket onto the patio and your family thought it was you landing, i thought you were going to say the cement leftovers had splattered all up your curtains since the doors were open, that would have been a big oops ;/
Thanks for nice words Loana and Nanny Beach and sorry for delay in response. Nanny B, Peninsula Prims is a nursery that I have used in the past.
Nice day today despite the freezing start. Managed to get 100 daffs planted that had only just arrived due to a mix up at the bulb factory. Then dug up my old nettle patch and planted some tulips, alliums and camassia that have been sat around forever
Finally ripped the last of the summer annuals out the pots, they still look okay despite the frosts, but I still had 8 million crocus and some manky looking hyacinths to plant and decided I should just bite the bullet.
According to the tulips that had been hung up in my shed, I have trapped a mouse inside. Left a few tulips but added a bowl of food and water

More leaf clearing for me today.
Cleared the lawn , but left the borders , should I clear those as well or is it ok to leave them and just let the leaves break down where they are ?
Dug over the new border before adding 5 trugs full of wormy soil from the veg plot then 20 bags of farmyard manure on top. Kept me warm, anyway!
Now out to plant 200 tulips before it gets dark as it looks like rain all day tomorrow.
Terry, I never clear leaves from borders - they act as a truly natural mulch and will be pulled down by the worms.
